Lejeune Marine, N.C. soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune Marine and a soldier from North Carolina have died in Afghanistan in recent days, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune Marine and a soldier from North Carolina have died in Afghanistan in recent days, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Marine Staff Sgt. Javier O. Ortiz Rivera, 26, of Rochester, N.Y., died Tuesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, officials said.

Rivera was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Army Pfc. Christian M. Warriner, 19, of Mills River, was among five troops from Fort Campbell, Ky., who died Sunday in Kunar province when insurgents attacked their unit with small-arms fire, officials said.

Warriner was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
