Lejeune Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune-based Marine was killed in combat in Afghanistan Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune-based Marine was killed in combat in Afghanistan's Helmand province Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced.

Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Meis, 20, was a machine gunner with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. He had deployed to Afghanistan in January.

Meis, who was from Bennett, Colorado, joined the Marines in January 2010 and had recently been promoted to lance corporal.

His awards include the National Defense Service, Afghanistan Campaign and Global War on Terrorism Service medals.
