Lejeune Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune-based Marine died during combat in Afghanistan Friday, the military announced.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune-based Marine died during combat in Afghanistan Friday, the military announced.

Sgt. Matthew J. Deyoung, 26, of Talent, Ore., was killed while supporting combat operations in the Helmand province.

Deyoung served with to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. He deployed with the unit to Afghanistan last November.

He joined the Marine Corps in November 2004 and was promoted to sergeant in June 2008. He served two tours of duty in Iraq, in 2006 and from October 2007 to May 2008. 

His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Afghanistan Campaign, Iraq Campaign and Global War on Terrorism Service medals.

Deyoung is survived by his wife and child.
