RALEIGH, N.C. — A 25-year-old teacher's assistant at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh appeared in court Tuesday on charges he had sex with a student.

Javon Lerail Walker was brought in for questioning Monday night after school officials asked police to investigate reports of a sexual relationship between Walker and a student.

He was then arrested, charged with four counts of sex offense with a female student and placed in the Wake County jail under a $200,000 secured bond.

Investigators say he had sex with the student several times between March 1 and Monday.

Under North Carolina law, a person in a position of authority such as a teacher can face criminal prosecution for sexual contact with a student even if the acts were consensual. Sex offense with a student is a felony.

Walker was hired as a teacher's assistant at Leesville Road in September, according to Wake County Public School System spokeswoman Stella Shelton. He resigned Monday night.

Shelton would not comment on Walker directly, but said that, at the high school level, teacher's assistants work with special education students.
