RALEIGH, N.C. — Students across the nation Thursday demonstrated their First Amendment rights and walked out of their classrooms to show solidarity with the victims of Texas elementary school shooting.

The bleachers at Leesville Road High School's football field were filled with students organizing in support of tougher gun laws and increased school safety.

On the football field, students they spoke out about gun violence and urged fellow students to contact lawmakers for change.

They also read aloud the names of the 21 victims and took a 21-minute moment of silence.

"It's very dangerous, one day, you come to school you don't know if you are going to live or not, so we want to show our support," said Maymouna Tall, also a freshman.

Thursday's event was part of a nationwide event promoted by the group Students Demand Action.
