RALEIGH, N.C. — Three years ago, Britton Buchanan, from Lee County, was a finalist on NBC’s “The Voice.”

When the coronavirus pandemic sent everyone into isolation, he found inspiration.

Buchanan’s just-released song, “Better,” comes after more than a year away from performing.

“For me, [it’s] the loss of human connection, the loss of being able to get in front of people and having that intimacy of playing them things that you’ve written and hearing that immediate response instead of writing something and then locking it in the shelf,” he said.

After being a finalist on The Voice, the 21-year-old lost a year of connecting with his fans, but he emerged with a big performance.

In April, Britton drove with his grandfather to Plains, Georgia, where he sang “Amazing Grace” for former President Jimmy Carter in his church.

“Jimmy Carter has always been my favorite. I’m so interested in politics, and he’s always been my hero. It was such a special experience,” Britton said.

The Sanford native said he loves living in LA. He has cultivated a career beyond The Voice. He’s balancing how fans know him from the show to the artist he’s become now.

“It’s a complicated thing when something defines in you in such a way that you have to recreate your identity afterwards,” he said. “I totally appreciate what it [the show] did for me and the audience it has given me, regardless of the complications we might have [laughs] and trying to create an identity outside of it.”

Buchanan is currently living in Los Angeles.
