SANFORD, N.C. — A Lee County High School student was arrested Wednesday afternoon after knives, a gun and ammunition were found in his car.

A school resource officer spotted two hunting knives in the student's vehicle in the school parking lot at 1708 Nash St. in Sanford.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded semi-automatic pistol and three loaded magazines locked in the trunk.

Jake Marion Young, 18, of 205 Acorn Drive in Sanford, was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school grounds and misdemeanor possession of a weapon on school grounds. He was held under $10,000 secured bond.

Authorities said there was no threat from the weapons to students or staff at the high school.

Gun found at Raleigh middle school

In Wake County Wednesday afternoon, parents of students at East Millbrook Middle School got an automated message from Principal Eric Fitts, who told them students walking outside a mobile classroom at the school on Spring Forest Road in Raleigh found a loaded handgun. They turned the gun in to the school office, and the student resource officer and local police were notified, Fitts said.

He did not offer any information about how the gun got on campus or who owned it, but noted that the possession of a weapon on school grounds is a serious offense.
