An Oregon school has teamed up with a local box company to create cheap and durable work stations for at-home learning.

it was. It was jarring. Many parents would agree with Rick Shool talking about the school year in 2020 will. We won't we closed schools, and then what? We did close schools. It was, you know, for two weeks and then for four weeks and then, you know we're not coming back. Rick has two kids at Mackay Elementary and is a member of the school's parent Teacher Club. Watching kids Last spring, you know, they were doing zoom and doing school on their beds, on the floor, on the couch. It was looking increasingly like they would be doing all distance learning or learning from home. And so we thought, What could we give the kids to help them succeed? This year, the answer was found in a material most have somewhere around the house cardboard. The idea. Use it to make desks for every student and create a personal space for learning at home. When their bodies air In that space, their minds say, I'm ready to learn. I'm ready for education. The parent Teacher Club teamed up with the local box company. Then one of the engineers in the Parent Teacher Club worked kind of hand in hand with box company to come up with a design made sure it was strong enough and safe enough and the right size. They raised enough money through a Go Fund Me campaign to order 350 desks. That's a free desk for each student and McKee Elementary. We're actually working on the extra desks going Thio kids and families that are experiencing house listen this right now, so we'll make sure that a few extra people get some desks that need them. The cardboard desks are expected to be delivered to families in the coming weeks. They can call their own. It's their space. It is four school, and I think it's gonna make all difference to help them engage and learn this year.

today, we're gonna be looking at founding Missing Angle. So our question is, how can I use what I know about angles to help me determine missing angle Benjamin's So you're gonna have to use what you know about a cute right in obtuse and strike angles in order to figure this out. So some things that are important to remember we always need to remember that right? Angles or 90 degrees straight angles are 180 degrees. And we also need to think about how angles or names you remember when we name angle, the Vertex is gonna be that middle letter. So if we have angle, ABC B is gonna be the Vertex because it's in the middle is the point where the two race combined to make that angle. If we know all the total parts of the angle, we confound the total angle by adding if we know the total angle. But we have a missing park that maybe you wanted to subtract at some point to find that missing angle. So let's look at some examples with our first example here, we can say, is asking for angle in em. So I see That's my total angle. I know my two parts. I know this angles 37 degrees on this angle was 26 degrees. So since I know both parts to found the total, all you have to do is add and you can see that this is 63 degrees. Here you can see an example of what the equation would look like without the numbers. I'm gonna add angle in young P plus angle L P M O, and that gives me the toe. So sometimes they ask you for the equation, not just the numbers. If we look at another example, this one's a little different because it combines three different angles to get the total is asking for the measure of angle STP. So again, I know all three pieces, so I'm gonna add those together to find the total so 41 plus 45 plus 20 that's going to give you your total. Okay, you can see the equation here as well. You'll notice that tea is in the center of each of these angle names because it's the vertex. So when you have all of the pieces, all you have to do is add Now we're going to switch it up a little bit. We're gonna ask for the angle of a B. D, and you can see now we're asking for a piece of the angle, not the total. So what's important here is that there's only one number one angle measurement here. But I don't know that this box is gonna tell me some important information. I know that this box represents angle ABC. It tells me that it's a right angle, so I remember that a writing was 90 degrees, so my total angle was 90 degrees. This piece of it is 33. So I need to figure out how much of that angle measure is left for angle a B day. So all you do is take your total, which is 90. You subtract the 33 which is the part that you know, and you say that it gives you 57 degrees. So if we look at a similar example here, we have angle E f g again. I have that box that represents a right angle and a writing was 90 degrees. I have angle E f h, which is 26 degrees. So if I take my total angle e f g, which is 90 degrees. I take away the part that I know, which is 26 and I can see that my answer is gonna be 64. So the piece that I have left is 64 degrees. Then it let's look at something besides of right angle. We're gonna apply the same concept that we did for the past example. But here, ah, J K is a straight angle. And I remember that a straight angle is 100 80 degrees. So that tells me that any angles at her own here have to be 100 80 degrees. Well, this piece of the angle is 122. I need to figure out what this missing angle is for angle L J K. So I'm gonna take 180. I'm going to subtract what I know of 122 and it's going to give me 58 degrees. So that tells me that angle L J K. It's 58 degrees now. This last one is a little bit different, but it's not too hard again. I have a straight angle, so I know it's 100 80 degrees. I have two parts, and then I'm gonna have to find the 3rd 4 So you have to add what you know, get your total and then subtracting from 180. Once you do that, you see that your angle is 36 degree. So here, with these problems, you just have to think about what parts do I know? And how do I figure it out? Do add or do us of?

As I was saying, in order to find out how many more pints they need to collect to meet their goal, you would have to subtract 100 minus 50 nine, Right When we subtract, you should always start at your ones. Calm in here. We have a zero, and I need to take away nine ones. Well, I can't do that when I don't have any ones to begin with. So that means I would need to go to my next door neighbor and try to regroup when I come here to the tens. Calm. You don't have any tens either, Genes. In order to subtract, I need to go all the way to my hundreds, fall and take the 100 away. Now, I've taken 100 away. I could move that 100 which is really 10 tens to the tens call. But I still need someone's that I could take away nine. Which means I'm gonna take a 10 away from the tens. Call, which means now we have nine tens and move that 10 to the ones call. Now I'm able to subtract properly. 10 minus nine equals one nine minus five equals four zero minus zero is zero. Which means the American Red Cross needs to collect 41 more pints of blood to meet their goal. Now, I'm not quite done because I still need to check for reasonable this. Well, in order to check subtraction, I would use the inverse operation, which is addition. And I would say to myself, OK, I think they need 41 more pints, and they already had 59. So if I put those two amounts together, do I indeed get their goal of 100? Well, let's see, one plus nine equals 10 so I'll put my zero here and then move my 10 to the tens. Call. One plus four is five and five plus five is Tim. So I do indeed get their goal of 100 points, which means my answer of 41 is a very reasonable answer. When you're working today, make sure you go and use those problems loving steps. Read each problem carefully. Look for the key words. Make a plan based on what the question is asking. Make sure to solve and show work, whether it's a number sense or drawing a picture. And finally, don't forget to check for reasonableness

Understanding the three types of symmetry.

I think everyone this weekend, man, we're gonna be focusing owned symmetry. And when we talk about things that have symmetry or are symmetrical, we talk about if you were to fold it or cut it in half both sides of the exactly the same. So it can't be almost the same. It has to be exactly the same. So if you were to take, um, let's say, for instance, circles with the smiley face Okay, if I were to fold it in half or cut it in half if it both sides matches up than it has symmetry. So this one, I can put it open day on, and we can say that it has vertical lines of symmetry. So if I could, it horizontally though I can't do it horizontally would just side to side because the eyes are at the top. There's no ads at the bottom, so it doesn't have symmetric if we think about, um, letters that have symmetry. Okay, one that comes to mind would be the letter a. But I and we're talking about capital letters here, So a think about what kind of symmetry would it have? So symmetry? There's three types that it can have. It could be horizontal, which is sad. Decide it could be vertical, which is up and down, or it can be diagonal, which would be corner to corner. So those are the three types of symmetry that you can have. So if I think about my upper case from a capital A if I put it in half horizontally Sad decides that doesn't work. If I could diagonally that definitely doesn't work. So it does have symmetry, but it would be bird. A cool symmetry. The letter a So if I were to fold it, both sides would be exactly the same. If we think about things outdoors animals, for example. Something that comes to mind would be a butter. Uh uh. I don't have my butterflies gonna have symmetry because I'm not artist. But if it were to look something similar to this as long as both sides look the same, then it would have symmetry. So, in an ideal world, a good artist like from the Saugus would have a symmetrical butterfly here. I can cut it in half bar tickly open down for it to match. Now, if I didn't have these two antennas on my butterfly. Then it would work. I could have a horizontal Alanis imagery as well. So you have to be careful with things. You have to make sure that they are exactly the same. If you were to, could it voted in half. So, for example, I went around my house and borrowed some things from Grayson, just like I borrowed her board. If I look at this Princess Tierro okay, if I were to cut it in half vertically up and down, it would line up. It would be exactly the same because I have jams that matched on each side. They're the same color. So this would have symmetry. It would have one lot of symmetry. It would be verticals is if I were to take this egg. Okay. If I wanted to find out if it had symmetry, I would look at it. I can't fold it horizontally because it's a little shape and the bottom is not the same top shape at the bottom, to the top and bottom of the same shape. So then I would take it and cut it vertically up and down this way. Yes, that would match up that Agnelli. It would not match up. So this only has one lot of symmetry. The egg If I take his coffee mug. Okay. If I were to take the handle well, then it would have symmetry. It would have a vertical honest imagery, but because it is a hat as the handle on one side, this object has no lots of symmetry because it's not even on the other side. Though if I had a handle here that it would have symmetry because I just have the one handle. It makes it not symmetrical, so it has zero lines of symmetry. If I look at a sheet of notepaper guy, it does not have symmetry because there's not holes on both sacks. If there were holes on both sides, then it will be symmetrical. So this sheet of notepaper has zero tolerance if symmetry. So again, remember symmetry. If you were to fold it or cut in half, both sides have to be exactly the same. You can have the rate types of symmetry horizontal, vertical diagonal. Those are the three types that you can have. So for your assignments today, you're gonna have to go around on a scavenger hunt and find things around your house. It could be inside or outside that have symmetric. And I want you to tell me what typhus image or do they have? Do they have article which is open Dale horizontal with decided to side or diagonal, which is from corner to corner. So that's the first part of your assignment for today. The second part of your assignment is to come up with four people in your family, their names and figure out how many lines of symmetry are in there now. So I'm gonna help you get started with that. So it may be easier to ride it on the sheet of notebook paper first, and then just type it and tell me how many you have you need in their bold or highlight the letters that have symmetry. All right, if I think about H, I want it to be exactly the same. So I can do it vertically. Four horizontally. So that has two lines of symmetry. So again, remember, if something is symmetrical, it lines up evenly on both sides. It matches identically. It could be a particle which is up and down, guy. It can be horizontal, would decide to side, or it could be Well, sorry about that. Or it can be diagonal. So you have three different types of symmetry. It also may not have symmetry. So for your scavenger hunt on Lee won't things that are symmetrical. So if you have a coffee mug of there, you need to make sure that is the copy mode that has two handles. fourth graders. I went to toys about park this weekend with my family and saw lots of different animals as he watched my clips from this weekend. Can you notice how each animal behaves? Doesn't use any of its senses to help it survive. Take a look. That's scary. Way found. Lots of animals didn't wait. These are the five that we featured in our video. Of course, there were other animals we stall, including turtles, other fish and ducks. What I'd like you to do now is pick one of the animals below. Describe how it might use it, senses to help it survive and toys, not park. Let's learn a little more about an animal senses and survival by comparing it to arms as humans, we get by with five senses sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. They worked well for us, but other animals have developed many strange and wonderful ways to find their way around the world and survive Gino's. Some dolphins, whales and bats navigate and track prey using echo location. This is a very advanced form of hearing that allows them to see their surroundings by listening to and analyzing the way sound reflects off objects in their environment. Many fish since their surroundings using a lateral line system, which detects changes in water pressure. This allows them to feel the movement of other animals in the water near by helping them survive attacks from predators. Snakes to use a special apparatus called Jacobson's organ to help them smell. Town collects chemicals from the air, and it pulls it in and holds it against this organ, which helps it to locate Wright. And even sharks have sensors that are sensitive to electric fields generated by other animals, and this helps them to generate a swift and vicious attack. So let's map it out. Our main question today is what strategies can we use to solve addition and subtraction problems? And there are lots of different strategies that we can use. I'm gonna show you a few today. And then, as you were doing these own your own, you need to be thinking about what strategy is easiest for me to use. What works the best for me. So there's really no right or wrong answer here. It's just whatever helps you solve these problems the best. Okay, so our first problem will be studio plus two equals, All right for them a click away from it and a bunch drag it down here. Um, one strategy that you can use is a number line. So I'm gonna click right here on the side where you got those? Dot dot dots. When we move, not picture over, I'll live me up here. They're weak. All right. Look, like on the dot dot dots and this shapes and the line, and I'm gonna create a number Line number lines are a great strategy to use when you start adding and subtracting. Okay, I don't need it too long. And I'm gonna write on my numbers on the number line. I'm start with zero one you very for. And so I'm gonna make dots here, and I'm clicking a couple of times just to make the dot Dark. And then so now, two plus two, I'm going, Teoh, I'm gonna get me assist Our, um You obviously can use just your finger. This is gonna be kind of like my pointer here. You can easily write one of these own notebook paper and create your own number line. You could use a ruler for a number line. Um, also, you can use pictures to solve these. So we're going to start on by and are we adding or subtracting? We're subtracting and what it's attract mean to take away. So we're going to start on five and we're going to take two away. Hey, guys, is Mr Edwards here today and I want to take some time. Teoh show you how to solve your genetics problems and how to fill out a planet square before began up. Like to quickly go over some key vote Kat terms that you absolutely have to know in order to be successful with any genetics problem. The first time I'd like to discuss is a little's. When we talk about a lil's and genes, we can say that it is. Are the Gino Types or home of Xigris? Dominant home is, I guess, recessive or hedgerows. Itis. So Homans, I guess, or pure, is angina type that is made up of the same to a little's. So, for instance, Capital T with a capital T or a lower case T with a lower case T. When we say header rows, I guess we talk about hybrids, and it's a Gina type that is made up of the dominant and recessive Alu. So, for instance, Capital T and lower Case T. So the problem that we have here today is that we have tall plants are dominant. So when we're looking at this, we can kind of break this down a little bit. And I wont to kind of look at our Gina types first and then our FINA types. So let's look at our percentages. Remember, a pun it square shows us the probability are likelihood having an all spring with a particular gina type or peanut. Now, each time these parents have another all spring, the probability of that offspring of being a certain FINA type or genotype does not change regardless of the number of offsprings those parents have. So when we look at our Gina types, we can see that we have 25 First it big t big d we see that right here. One out of four is 25%. We can say that we have 50% big t little t and then we can say See, two out of fours, 50% and then we can say we have 25% little t little T Now remember, this is homes, I guess. Dominant big tree, Big T This one here is header rows against big T little t And this one is home is, I guess. Recessive little t little T. Now, these represent our gino types are the actual a wheels that these offsprings will have? I want you to notice that when we look at our FINA types, these numbers change a little bit. Remember fino types of what you can physically see. I can't see if a plant has, uh, to Capitol teas are just too dominant. A leal's or two recessive alleles are one dominant little one recessive lille. But I can tell that that plant is tall or short. In this case, the offspring from this parents three out of four plants are going to be tall, so it will be 75% tall, and one out of the four plants are going to be sure. Remember, the dominant trait is always expressed, so the big T will dominate the recessive little T. So my question says, What is the probability of having a short plant and your answer would be 25%? Okay, guys, I don't know about you, but this whole quarantine has got me pretty bored. And my mind is racing had this. I did. So I came across these bad boys left over Easter egg Candies for my son and decided that I want to try the launch. These to my next door neighbor on their about 150 feet away in these eggs, fully loaded down are roughly the size of, ah, tennis ball of the weight of a tennis ball. And so I want to challenge you. Teoh. See who can build the best at home catapult with just materials that they have laying around the house. Now, when doing this, we have to remember that we we've got to be engineers. We've got to go through the engineering process. So I kind of want to walk you through that process real quick before you get started on this adventure. And by doing so, if you'll use this link right here, it will type that in your boat to get access. Teoh. Nice little thing that might guide you along through this process. Okay, So the engineering process now the inter name process is a lot like the scientific method in a lot of ways, you know, you always you ask yourself a question, so identify the needs and the constrict, so we know that I want o launch Easter egg Candies and I want to get them around 100 feet and they're roughly the size of our the weight of a tennis ball. So then we need to research the problem. So while doing this, I've shared a link Teoh for with you that's going to tell you about Newton's laws of motion. And you really need to get a great understanding of Newton's laws of motion before you start actually building anything because his works kind of give us the background information that we need toe truly understand why and how things are happening. Once you've researched the problem, though, once you know the why and how you think and start imagining so developed possible solutions. Look for things around your house that may actually help you with this catapult. And then plan, plan, plan, plan Select a promising solution and plan some. Or think about all the little needy, greedy details that don't need to be successful in this and building your catapult. And then here comes the fun part create. So build you a prototype, see what it can do. It doesn't have to be a full size working catapult that launches it 100 feet or shoot something that heavy. But you can build a smaller prototype. That kind of guides you through the process and see what works and what doesn't work. And then test this prototype test and test and test some or take notes record. See what observations you have, What worked? What didn't work? What could you do better? And then after you've collected all of that data from your chest, improved and redesign. So go through and see. Okay, how can I do this? Make the improvements necessary, and then guess what? Tested again. Yeah. See how well it works. See if you're improvements made it bet so. If you'll walk through this, you'll see that I've got a chart here. That kind of God's You threw these process. You're asking your researching. Developing your solutions and your plan. I even gave it a little table for you to fill everything out and then some questions to see what you've got. And once you're done and you think that you've completed this challenge, okay? 8th-grade language arts lesson on citing textual learning.

I think this is Miss Skinner, eighth grade language arts teacher. And today we're gonna be talking about siding Text. How do we sight picture? We used evidence from the text to support our answer. What is evidence is proving. Is it closed or example, What is text, text or works? Pieces of writing Korea's even our nose. What if the work support me? Support means to help, To reinforce, to give assistance. Toe even needs to hold up. What is an answer? An answer is a response or a reaction to a question. So what is all that may so side of? Textual evidence requires the Raider to look back into the text for evidence to support an idea. It's a question or to make a quint. So how do we provide textual evidence in a text? Well, that's what we're gonna talk about today, and I'm gonna show you an easy way to do that. We're going to use race. Race is an Afridi, Um, or we stay, answer site and explain. So restating is easy. You just restate your question in your answer. So when we answer our question, you just answer your question in your own words. Sometimes this is an inference and other time it stated directly in the text. See, you saw your evidence. So when you saw your evidence, you take it directly out of the text. You can do this one or two ways. You can directly state it from the offer using a direct quote, or you can indirectly state it pair of phrasing with the author sees. You can use different Senate starters to help explain your answers. I'm gonna give you just a couple of Senate starters that you can use. You can say the offer stated. For example, according to the text in paragraph, until me, the number or own page so and so it say it. So at the end of this presentation, I'll give you a pdf that's got all of them so much E a stand forks blunt in your own words. You're going to explain how this evidence supports your answer. And there's also some Senate starters that go along with its blood. You can say as a result up this shows that therefore, this is the call for this reason, the evidence suggests, or it can be concluded that so this is how you would provide textual evidence in a text when your teacher asks you a particular question. So let's give it a drop. Um, I'm good. Pull from the story. Thank you, Mayor. This is a story that are a greater every and so this is one that we're all very familiar with. So in the story, why does Why does Roger steal the first? Well, we all know that Roger still supposed because he wanted about, you know, shoot. So I've restated my question. Roger wants to steal the personally calls. He wanted to buy a new pair of feet. I'm citing my evidence because it says on page six, paragraph 10. The offer wrote I wanted a pair of blue say sweat shoots and explain. Roger was stealing because he wanted to buy she. So now I want you to track. How is miseries, Jones box? So I'm gonna pull up the part of the text so you can look and you can find where it talks about miseries Jones. 1,000,000,000 boss. And it's right here. So I want you to start where the woman say is where the woman said You want to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. At least I can do now is wash your face. Are you hungry? No one sin the being dragged the boy. I just want you to turn me loose without bothering you. When I turned the corner, said the woman. No. But you put yourself in contact with they said the woman If you think that contact is going to last a while you got another thing coming. When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs Luella Bates Washington Jones. So I want you to think about that for a moment, and I hope you to point out to May What? Two places in here You find where Mrs Jones was being, what we would consider bossy. Okay, so tell me what? Okay, So if you say it, you put yourself in contact with May. You are correct. And tell me one more. That is correct when I get through with you, you were going to remember miseries the well of That's Washington Jones. Can't you just see her right now saying that to him? I love this story. Okay, so we need to think about how we're going to restate, answer side and explain. So you just told me the site and the answer in the restates said, Oh, you have to do now is explained. So let's say Mrs Jones is considered ballsy because she takes control of the situation. For instance, in the text, Miss Jones makes a comment to Roger that you put yourself in contact with them in. Then she says, When I get early, you sir, you are going to remember. This is Lou l Abate Washington job. As a result, it shows that Miss Jones is ballsy. So if you have that, you are correct. So right here I have for you the pdf uh, the race. Remember, value means how much. Okay, so the first coin that we're gonna look at today is the dime. We have our little poem Dime, dime, little and thin. I remember your worth 10. So it's worth 10 cents and this is our sent symbol. So let's zoom in on the front of the time. The front of the dime has a former president on it named Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also on the front of the dime is the year that the dime was made as well as the word liberty. Okay, on the back of the dime, silly Miss Pit on the back of the time in the center of the very middle has a torch, and then on both sides, there's a new all of branch on one side and an oak branch on the other. Also on the back of the diamond says one dime. So you know that when you look at the back, you can tell and identify which coin it is by looking at the back. It says one dime in the diamonds worth 10 cents. So it is silver or gray, and it is made of metal. It has a rough edges, which means it's not smooth. You rang your finger now across, it would be bumpy. It's got rough edges. Crime. And there we go with the place value. Remember, the dime is worth 10 cents with our sent sent symbol on. So here's one. This is Kansas is State quarter. We have one from Pennsylvania, which is another state in the United States. And then I have another one from Vermont. So the back could be a little bit different and could either have the bold eagle on it, or it could be one from a specific state. Okay, when we're looking at the quarters edges, these also are rough. Okay, So today boys and girls were going to be focusing on two specific coins. The penny is the first coin that we're going to focus on. So let's review the penny is worth one cent and this is the front of the penny, all right, here. And this is the back of the penny. It says one sense. So you know how much it's worth. And the vocabulary were that we talked about yesterday about how much something is worth is the value. Okay, the value is how much. Okay, so let's go ahead and read our poem again. Penny Penny easily spent copper brown and worth one cent. Good job. All right. So like we said yesterday, the penny is worth one cent. And here is a model of how to do that with our place value. So let's look at the petting, because today we're gonna be talking about the characteristics of the penny. So we have the penny right here. I and on the front of the penny, we have Abraham Lincoln. We have in God we trust, and it usually has the date. This is a 2020 penny because we're in the year 2020 but you can have many different dates on then. The back of the penny says, You know, states of America and is usually says one cent. Okay, so it tells you the value of the penny on the pinion. Okay, so we know that the penny is copper. We can see that the penny iss smooth on the sides, smooth on the sides. It's not rigid. It's smooth, like you can rub your finger on it and it's flat. It's worth one cent. Um, OK, so some things were gonna make a bubble map. We're gonna make a bubble map today, boys and girls. So Penny is in the middle and we're going to talk about the character. Six of the penny. So it is one cent. It is bronze, which means kind of like brown or it's made of copper. What else do we know about the penny? We know that Abraham Lincoln is on the penny. He's one of our presidents. Came Abraham Lincoln. Then we can say another way we can write one cent is to spell it out. We know that the sides are smooth, smooth sides. Sorry, that was kind of slot B. All right. So let's review we have one cent bronze or cop made of copper. We have Abraham Lincoln. We have one cents. We have the smooth sides. Okay, Um, it says one cent on the back. All right, so the next coin that we talked about yesterday waas the nickel. So here's the front of our nickel. We have Thomas Jefferson on the front of the neck. Oh, and on the back of the nickel, we have kind of looks like the White House, but it's not. It is called the Monticello. And this is, um, Thomas Jefferson's house. So he was the president, and it says United States of America, and it says in little, little, little were letters right in between. Right here is as five cents, so it gives you a clip. All right, So, like we said, the nickel is worth five cents and we have 123455 cents and you can write it out with words. OK, now we're going to dio a bubble map on the nickel. Okay, so everything we know about the medical, okay? So the person who's on the nickel is Thomas Jefferson. His name is capitalized because it's a proper now. Um, OK, so a nickel is worth How much? Five cents. And it says five cents right on the nickel. Another way we can write five cents is this way. Five cents. Um, what color is the nickel? Well, it's kind a silver or gray. So alright. Silver in our poem and gave us some characteristics of the nickel dick and that. Okay, so on the side of the nickel also is some ooze. Okay. All right. So we have Thomas Jefferson's home on the back of the nickel is on the backs. Remember, it's not the White House. Alright. So to review our Nicholas worth five cents the value of the Nicholas five cents, you can write it in words, or you can write it using the sense symbol. Thomas Jefferson is the president who was on the front of the nickel. The Nicholas thick and fat. It's smooth on its sides. It silver or gray in color, and the Monticello is on the back. All right, so you guys have a seesaw activity to do with making a bubble map about the nickel as well as the penny. And tomorrow we're going to focus on the diamond. The quarter. Understanding partitions of a shape - halve, whole, quarter

first grade. It's Miss Pitt. I hope you all had a great weekend this week in math. We're going to be talking about partitioning. So let's go ahead and see what are essential. Question is, how can you partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares? So we're gonna talk about some vocabulary words today. Partition means to cut. So as you can see, we have some circles cut into halfs and forts or into two parts and four parts, and then we have some rectangles down here. Now we have equal means. This same and shares is something we're gonna talk about later on. So keep that in mind. The first vocabulary word we're going to focus on today is partition. Partition means to cut or divide. So as you can see, you have a doughnut and Miss Pitt partition the doughnut down the center, I cut it or I divided it into two equal parts. The next vocabulary word that we're going to talk about today is called halves and halves mean to equal shares. So we're going to look at the rectangles first. So I chose brownies because for some reason today I have a sweet tooth as you can see my donut and brownies. So we have two brownies and they're both partitioned or cut into two equal shares. So Miss Pitt cut or partitioned this brownie into half one share two shares. They're the same size. And here's another example of how you can partition a brownie or a rectangle into two equal shares or halfs. So let's say I give this top half to Miss Dean's and I give this bottom half to Miss Langston I shared. I gave them to equal shares. Okay, so let's look at the circles. Miss Pitt partition the circles in half, two different ways. So on this side, I partition the circle into half straight down the middle one chair to shares the same size or about the same size. And on this side, I partition the circle in half this way horizontally, and they're the same size at the top, in the bottom or about the same size. So let's keep in mind. Half are to equal shares that have the same size one share in the other share. The next vocabulary word we're going to be focused on is called forts. So just like halfs. Fourth. What? What word do you hear in the word fourths? Forward fourths are four equal shares. So if we're focusing just on the rectangles right now, Miss Pitt, partition this rectangle. You could say this was a brownie. We partitioned this brownie into four equal shares. I want my friends to have the same amount as me. So I have this share. I give away these shares. We all have the same amount. So we have 1234 equal parts or shares. Right here, Miss Pitt. Partition the brownie in a different way to show four equal shares. And this is the third way I could partition a brownie into four equal shares. Let's look at the circle. Now. The circle is a little bit different. The circle on Lee can be partitioned one way in order to get four equal shares. 1234 Now let's look here. Why can't we have this be partitioned into fourths? Why don't have a big Red X. Well, I know fourths are for equal shares. And when I look at this part or this share and I look at this share, I know they they're not the exact same size. So this one cannot be equal. They're not equal. So this one is not partitioned into four equal shares. Okay, the next vocabulary word we're going to talk about is the whole which means the entire amount. The whole. Okay, so let's say you wanted to eat a whole pizza by yourself. The entire pizza is the whole. The way that you cut the pizza is how you partition it. Okay, so let's say right here we have our rectangle, and the whole amount is the whole rectangle, and we partitioned it into halves or two different parts, or to equal shares. So we have the whole on. We have a part over here. We have our whole circle or a whole pizza, and then we have part of the pizza. And another part, the shares are the parts, and we need to make sure that they are equal or the same size. Okay, so Miss Pitt has a soccer ball and Miss Pitt is going to partition or cut her soccer ball into halves. Here, Miss Pitt partition the soccer ball in half. There are two equal shares. One part and another 12 I cut it where I partitioned it in half. Now Miss Pitt is going to partition a soccer ball into fourths or four equal parts. Miss Pitt partition the soccer ball into fourths or four. Equal parts 12344 Equal shares. So we have our partition soccer ball into fourths. Then we can slide them together. Our whole is the whole entire soccer ball the entire piece. We partitioned it into halves first, and then Miss Pitt partitioned it into fourths. So what do you guys are going to be doing today on seesaw or at your at home learning packet? You're going to be matching the vocabulary words and their definitions to the pictures to make sure that you have a really good understanding off the words so that we can move forward and tomorrow with half and then the next day with fourths. So first we need to remember what partition means. Partition means to cut or divide. Remember, I had my tasty doughnut and I divided it or I cut it into half. Okay, so the whole is the entire amount. The whole piece of pizza are the whole brownie. The entire amount shares are the parts. So we split this brownie into half and you get a part and I get a part. But originally at first I had a whole brownie with no shares here. I had a whole pizza and I partition or cut my whole pizza into half or two equal parts. The Children were sharing different types of foods and they had to partition or break or cut their food or drink in half. And they had to share. Each one had to have an equal amount of shares. So when I have my brownies, I have the whole browning at first, and then I cut are partitioned by brownie into half. I have one share and I have two shares. One half plus 1/2 equals the entire hole because if you put them together, you would have the entire whole amount. Okay, so Miss Pitt is going Teoh show you. I have a piece of bread is a rectangle and I'm going to partition my rectangle in half. So I'm going to take my knife and I'm going to cut or partition my rectangle into two equal shares. Okay, so I had the whole and now I have to half one way that you can check and make sure that they are equal shares is to put them on top of each other. Each parts, each part is equal. So we have 1/2 and 1/2 equals the whole another way that you can partition a piece of bread or rectangle is this way again. I can check to make sure that how equal shares by putting them on top of each other, They are equal. So I have 1/2 and 1/2 equals one hold piece of bread. Okay, let's do this with a cracker, cause a cracker is a circle. So we have our whole circle and we can partition our circle in half. Well, okay. So we can put it on top of each other. And there are two equal shares. 1/2 and 1/2 equals one whole. Another way that you can partition. That got a little bit messy, huh? Another way you can partition the circle is this way. So I decide again. You can place the top on the bottom or the bottom on the top, and you can see that they are equal. So we have one share and another share equals one hope. So half today are 1/2 plus another half equals one hope. Okay. So, today, boys and girls, you guys were gonna be using an online deal board. Miss Pitt has drawn a geo board to show you so what your questions are going to look like is can you make a square with your geo board and you're going have to partition your square into two equal parts or halfs? So Miss Pit's gonna partition her square and to have and I'm going to color in 1/2 of my square because this is one part of my square, one part of my whole. So I have half or one share, and then I have another half over here. 1/2 plus 1/2 equals the whole. Remember, if we put it on, if we put this on top of this, it would equal one hole. Okay? way boys and girls, we are back today with partitioning are essential. Question is, how can you partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares? We know equal shares just means that there are equal parts. Okay, to review again. Partitioning means to cut or divide the whole is Theo entire amount. And what we're going to focus on today are fourths. If you look at the word fourths, you see the word for now, that's just this in easy way to remember that fourths are split into four equal shares or partitioned into four equal shares. So Miss Pitt drew some ways that you could partition a rectangle in a circle into four equal shares. Okay, so the first partition that we're going to Dio is with our circles, and we're gonna partition our circle into fourths or four different parts. So on Monday, I said that there was only one way to partition a circle, and I said it was this way. Now we have four equal parts Now. Miss Pitt has thought about this a little bit, and this is also a way that you can partition a circle. So it's just making sure that our pieces are as equal as you can get them, but they will be equal all around, so we have equal shares. Okay, We're going to move into partitioning are rectangles into fourths or partitioning them into four equal parts. So Miss Pitts trick, um, to partitioning rectangles into fourth is that you can partition in half first, and then add a line partition, that part in half and partition this part of so that you're making your equal shares as equals. You can. All right, so we're gonna do it this way. And so, Miss Pits going to partition it in half in minds a little bit crooked. That's OK. And then misfits gonna partition this part in half in this part in half. So another way to partition erect tingle into fourths is like this. And now we're gonna talk about this. We cannot partition our rectangle into fourths with the ex method because these two pieces are bigger than thes two pieces. If I were to cut this out and laid this piece on top of this piece, it would not be equal. Okay. Connotations - Learning the feelings behind words. 

Hi, My name is Miss Rogers, and today I'm gonna be teaching you a mini lesson on connotation. Now, in reading. It's very important that we understand what a text means and says, but it's also important to do a little research and dig a little bit to figure out why. And author writes a certain way, and this is called authors Craft. So others craft are techniques and elements that a Roger writer uses to have a very distinct voice. If you've ever rent shel silver scenes problems, you'll know that his voice has a singsong type poetry. You know the words that he uses. Also, for example, Dr Seuss has a specific voice. He often uses words that are nonsensical, and most of his words run with each other so you can automatically read a lot, um, from a poem without his name on it. And you can almost guess that it was written by Doctor Seuss. Many authors have a very distinct voice, and it's because of the words and elements that they use, and this is called word choice. Others choose their words just like painters. Choose paint colors and chefs choose ingredients for a recipe words have both the de notation and a connotation. A de notation is the dictionary, meaning that a word uses and that's easy. That's just the regular literal meaning. Connotation, however, isn't unclad, meaning. It's a feeling that kind of goes along with the word. It's either positive or negative and sometimes neutral. But you have to feel what the word feels, and I'll show you some practices to do with this, to figure that out. All right, so here we have a few lines. Words are always on some sort of feeling radiant. They can either be really positive, regularly positive, neutral or negative, and you'll see what I mean in a second. So our first example, we have the word smart. Yeah, sorry, it's a little positive. But what would we say? What kind of world would be used if it means smart? But it's really a positive word. You want to really make your characters sound like they're very, very smart. He might use the word clever. There are several the words you could use on this radiant you could put intelligent and they're bright. All of which would be more on the positive son now for a negative side. If you wanted to imply that your character is smart but smart and more of a negative way, you might use the word sly. Another example is the word. Pretty Now. Pretty does sound positive, but let's go a little bit more on the positive side. Well, what if someone was really pretty? A character is very pretty, we might say the word gorgeous. By using that word, you're implying that that character is even better than pretty. Do you see how the word kind of it brings an emotion with it? You almost have to think of yourself. Would you rather be described as this sword? This and you have to plug it in. So I think I would rather be described as clever than sly and gorgeous rather than just attractive. The last example was happy. How is a positive word? But how do we describe someone who's very happy? We might say that person is giddy, we could say elated. We could say a numerous words, but just know that they're only spectrum. There are many more positive words along the spectrum, and our negative work for happy could just be content. You're not jumping up and down. You're OK, All right, so let's practice a little bit with our positive and negatives. Let's see if we can pick the which sentences positive and negative connotation. Number one. Callous, very thrifty person. Cal is a very stingy person. Both thrifty and stingy means saving money. Which one is painted in a positive light? If you said the rift E, you're right, stingy just means he's saving his money, but it's more of a negative feeling in the word stingy. Number two. He wears classic styles, or he wears old fashioned styles. Well, if it were me, I'd rather be described as wearing classic styles as opposed to old fashion. So classic is much more positive. Number three. Every morning he trudges to work. Every morning he spreads to work well, which one sounds positive or negative? It sounds more happy in a sprint toe. Work trudging makes me feel like you're not learning to go, and so trudging would be more negative and sprints would be positive. And before Cal drives an antique car, cow drives an ancient car. Well, if you had a car, would you like it to be described? His antique or ancient, I believe, and he is more positive here. When I say the word agent with car, I normally think it's falling for number five. His wife insists that he fixed the car himself for his wife, encourages him to fix the car himself. Well, if someone was insisting that you do something or encouraging you to do something, which one would sound more positive? If you think encourages is more positive, you're correct. Insisting is more of like a demand, and I couldn't use the word demand there for negative number 61 day, cow son requested a room on his own. One take how son demanded a room of his own hears the word demanded and demanded would definitely be more negative. So hopefully after that, practice your understanding a little more on the next slot, we're gonna take it one step further. We're going to try to figure out if the sentence is positive or negative and connotation, and then we're gonna change the sentence to be the opposite connotation. You'll see what I mean. Our first sentence. Miss Rogers walked into class and smiled at her students. Well, is the word smiled positive or negative it's positive. So we're gonna change the sentence now and we're gonna think of the sentence that is more negative connotation. Now. It's gotta be, Scott means smiled, but it's gotta be more on the negative side. So what is a smile that's more negative? Him? I think it's smart. So Miss Rogers walked in the class and smirked at her students. That definitely sounds a little more negative. Let's try another one. Number two. The teacher access your youthful appearance. The class thought she was a new student. Well, youthful. That's pretty positive. Full of youth. Now think of something that means someone is young, but it's kind of negative. What about shouted sh. The teacher had such a childish appearance. The class thought she was a new student. It still means young, but it has a negative feeling attached to it. I wouldn't want to be called childish. Number three. Miss Rogers is so cheap that she makes some of her bookshelves out of crates. That's true. Is it positive or negative? Cheap. I don't think anybody likes to be called cheap, so that's probably a negative comment ation. So let's change the word to mean that she saves money, but she does it in a positive way. Miss Rogers is so thrifty. I like that a lot better that she makes some of her bookshelves out of crates. Imagery in literature allows words to paint a vibrant picture. 

My name is Miss Roger Waters, and this is part of the reading with Roger Siri's Today I'm introducing imagery. An imagery is part of the author's craft. So just this before you've seen my other videos, we'll start with authors craft and what that means. It's just the way and author writes his or her story or text. Any piece of writing has a crafty author chooses words intentionally, and the choosing of words is called Word Choice. Authors, just like painters and chefs, choose their colors or choose their ingredients just like they choose their words. So today we're gonna talk about imagery and all their shoes specific types of imagery in order to get the reader to build a picture in their minds, you'll see what I mean in a second. I'm Generally, imagery is language that is descriptive, and it deals with the fast since is so you'll deal with how things taste, helping smell, how things feel, sound and look, and again we'll see some examples in just a moment. All right, so here's an original sentence. She drink water on a hot day. If you close your eyes, you really couldn't paint a picture there's not much description in that sentence, so we're gonna change it by adding a bit of imagery. And remember, imagery is when we appeal to the senses so we can talk about how that water looks, How it tastes help feels how it sounds, any of those things to describe this activity. So now I've added descriptive words. The cool, refreshing water clinched her thirst as the scorching sun radiated on her. So at that point, now even paint a picture in your mind of a girl who's definitely tired or hot, and she's drinking some cool, refreshing water. The descriptive words appealed to your senses, and you're able to paint a picture in your mind of what's going on. So let's practice together. We're gonna add energy to these sentences to make them more vivid. Number one. The house looked run down again. It's hard to picture that house in your head. You're not quite sure what about that house looks run down so generally when you add imagery and makes your sentences longer and you kind of tell what kind, how many? Which one? And you just describe everything in this sentence. So in order to change this one, we added descriptions. The crumbling shack looked as if the yellowed spiderweb windows were the only things holding up the rotting timbers of the roof. Yes, it's still since the same thing the house looked run down. But in this version, you can close your eyes and see the crumbling shack. You can see the yellow windows in your mind with spiderweb cracks in them, and you see the rotting timbers. Okay, never to the cookies were burned. Well, all of us can imagine what burn cookies look like in our head. But this sentence really doesn't help us paint a picture in our minds. There are no descriptive words that really help. So here we've changed an added description. The chocolate chip cookies were crisp and crumbling in the chunks of tar like booze. All right, that's a good one. That one talks about your site. You can see it, and you can almost feel it tar like use. I can kind of feel that being really sticky, angry. All right, Number three. The couch was comfortable. Well, in this one, you don't even know what kind of catch to imagine in your head. So let's add a little bit of description and build that image in our minds. The plush velveteen couch enveloped my body in the most pillow like cocoon. All right, in this one. I know it's soft, it's plush. It's like a velvet, and it's must be very, very soft. Okay, so imagery really helps us paint pictures in our minds. Have you ever read a book? And you were confused if you saw the movie or read the book? I do that all the time. When I read, I paint pictures in my mind as I go, and I can't remember if I saw the movie or read the book. That's when the authors really using great imagery heart. So let's try some examples. We're going to read this excerpt from all summer in a day. It's a short story about Ray Bradbury. If you've not read it, you should really read it. It's very interesting. It's actually said in Venus. Here I go. I want you to listen out for imagery, so listen out. When the author describes how something looks, tastes, sounds, feels any of that it rand. It had been writing for seven years, thousands upon thousands of days compounded and field from one into the other with rain with the drum and gush of water with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were title ways come over the islands. 1000 forests had been crushed under the rain and grown up 1000 times to be crushed again. And this was the way life waas forever on the planet Venus. And this was the school room of the Children of the rocket men and women who had come to a reigning world to set up civilization and live out their lives. All right, so the author here is painting the setting of Venus Norris. And obviously we have never been Venus. So we're trying to paint a image in our minds. So let's look at the piece and find those descriptive words that help us see. There are a lot of sound imagery here, like things that you could here. So let's see if we can find some. All right, I can hear the drum of rain. You can hear it fitting something. The gush of water. You can kind of see that the sweet crystal ball, having seen a crystal chandelier or crystals hanging. You can kind of see those glistening raindrops look like crystals. The concussion of storms. You can kind of hear that thunder heavy. That's a feeling heavy. And they were. Title waves come over the islands. There must be a lot of rain. Okay, 1000 sports have been crushed, so you know, this rain is coming down quite heavily. All right. So authors like to use imagery in order to paint pictures in our minds. Without imagery, reading would not be a fun. Rogers. And welcome to the reading with Roger Siri's Today I'm gonna be introducing figurative language and grassy heard of many types of negative language. But today we're gonna focus on just three. This is also part of the Siris on authors craft and just a reminder authors craft or the techniques and elements a writer uses to create their own voice and a piece of writing. You might have heard me talk about word, choice and imagery. Well, those are all authors craft. Today we're gonna talk about the figured of language that authors choose, and the times are similes, metaphors and personification. So figure of language, figure of language is anything your speech, which depends on a non literal meaning. What that really means is whenever the author uses figured of language, they're not really saying what they mean, and you'll see what I mean. In a second, it's a figurative meaning. Okay, so simile compares two things that are unlike and use the word like her as a metaphor compares two things that are not alike and really says one thing is another thing. There's no like or as in that one, many people get the metaphor and simile, confused and personification is where then writer gives human qualities toe a non human thing and you'll see that in just a moment. All right, so let's see some examples. Similes, You were as brave as a lion. Now have I know this is assembly. If you think about the definition assembly is when a rider compares one thing to another thing that are completely different, using the word like or as so do we have to things being compared here you is being compared to a lion. Now, are they connected with the words like or as they are the word ass? The next one is Marco runs like a cheetah. Marco is being compared to a cheetah, and the world like is connecting the two. So those are two similes now for metaphors, thes are a little trickier. It's where you're saying one thing is something completely different. Okay, but classroom was a zoo. All right, so classroom is being compared to a zoo. Now, does the author here mean that a classroom has turned into a place where animals and, uh, animals are locked up in cages? Has a costume really turned into a zoo no. Well, the author really means here is that the classroom has become chaotic, like a zoo. That's what I mean by non literal meaning. The author really isn't meaning what they're saying. You're having to think about it. So if you call the classroom of zoo, your mind automatically paints it as a chaotic place. Okay, The next metaphor is the ballerina was a swan gliding across the stage. Now we're comparing the ballerina to a swan. Now that's the battery and turn into a swan. No, she doesn't. The author is just trying to make you think that the ballerina is like a small and, you know in your head that the swan is graceful, okay? And the next one is personification. Personification is where we're giving non human characteristics to something that's not alive. So in this case, lightning danced across the sky will generally for personification. We want to look at the verbs Now what is the verb in the sentence? The verb is danced. Well, what's dancing? Lightning? Combining dance? No humans dance. So that's personification. The next one is read or heard The last key supply calling her name. Well, we had two verbs here Heard, will read Akin here when we have calling and who's calling the pie? Alright, pie cannot call. So that is come. That is definitely personification. All right, so let's practice together. Here are in a label each example with an Esper simile and infer metaphor or P for personification. So let's see how we do on this one. Remember toe. Look for two compared things, or look at those verbs to see if it's a personification. The moon was the ghostly galleon tossed to pull in the cloudy seas. Now are we comparing two things? I do believe we are the man and the Gallion, which is a ship now. Did the moon turn into a ship? No. So that means this must be simile or metaphor is comparing two things. But what does it not have? It does not have like her as so that one must be a metaphor. Number two when the stars threw down their spears. Okay, I don't see them comparing two things. What's the bird through whose throne stars in starts throw, you know, so that one must be for personification number through he would write, but his hours are as busy as bees in the sun. Hmm. I know. I see something. I like her. And as as busy as that must be a what? A simile. Number four. And then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils. I'm not sure there's anything being compared here. Let's see. Fills and dances. What's dancing my heart? Can heart stance? No Humans dance. It's gotta be personification. And number five My brain is fire. My heart is lead. Okay, I definitely see some care. Harrison's here brain the fire heartened lead. Do they turn into those things? Know? Is there like your ass? No. So it must be a metaphor. Okay, Probably that helps your understanding. Now let's look at figured of language in an excerpt. Now, this is the next step from all Summer in a day by Ray Bradbury. It's a science fiction story, and it's really good If you haven't read it, it's set in Venus, which is pretty cool. So I'm gonna read and we're gonna look out four the simile and metaphor personification and we're gonna ask ourselves while the author use those. But they were running and turning their faces up to the sky and feeling the sun on their cheeks like a warm iron. They were taking off their jackets and letting the sun burn their arms. Oh, it's better than the sun lamps, isn't it? Much, much better. They stopped running and stood in the great jungle that covered Venus that grew and never stop growing tumultuously even as you watched it. It was a nest of Octa pot, clustering up great arms of flesh like we'd wavering flowering in this brief spring, it was the color of rubber and ash. This jungle from the many years without son it was the color of stones and white cheeses and ink, and it was the color of the moon. So if you have underlined a couple of pieces of figure of language in the first paragraph of underlying like a warm iron, Okay, so like a one iron is a what if you said similarly you're correct. Now the author uses that the sun warms their cheeks like a warm iron to get you to understand how hot it waas Now did it burn them like an iron? Not quite. They are getting some bird, but she wants you to know how hot and and shocking this sunshine is because I give you a hint in the story In Venus, it rains every day all day, so they don't see the sun generally. All right. And we have another underlying part. It was a nest of octopus. And this is where they're talking about the jungle. All the plants out there. Okay, so it was a nest of Octavia. Well, was the jungle really full of octopus? No. So this is a metaphor. But when they are out there saying is that the weeds were all around like arms. They were just growing everywhere. So this author really wanted to paint an image in your head of what this sunshine looked like all of a sudden. And they wanted these negative language to paint more images in your mind. That is, authors craft, and those are figured of language. So hopefully you understand a little bit about figured of language.
