RALEIGH, N.C. — People will have a final chance Thursday to comment on plans to widen Interstate 440 in west Raleigh before the project starts this fall.

I-440 will be expanded from four to six lanes between Wade Avenue in Raleigh and Walnut Street in Cary. The stretch of highway, which dates to the 1960s also will be repaved, and bridges and interchanges will be upgraded, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The section causes bottlenecks as six lanes reduce to four at either end, causing congestion that is forecast to increase, DOT officials said.

At the meeting, set for 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the McKimmon Center, 1101 Gorman St., DOT officials and representatives of the Lane Construction design-build team handling construction will be available to discuss the project and answer questions.

Anyone unable to attend the meeting can offer comments by calling or emailing David Hering, the DOT project manager, at dthering@ncdot.gov or 919-707-6617.

Construction on the $475 million project is expected to start in September and finish in 2023.
