DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham facility named in memory of Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski's mother finished its first full school year Friday.

The Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center helps at-risk elementary- and middle-school children in Durham's West End community achieve in academics and leadership skills to prepare them for college.

The 29,000 square-foot center, which opened last year, has seven multipurpose rooms for after-school workshops and meetings, a basketball court and a stage. The organization works closely with the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, which also helps youth in the Durham community.

Coach Kyzyzewski, who has said he is a product of a Chicago neighborhood community center, wanted the facility to be named for his mother, who died in 1996, because of its emphasis on family life.
