KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Knightdale ventriloquist Anne Wall is spreading Christmas cheer with her 6-foot professional ostrich puppet, Audrey Twinkle Toes.

According to Wall, Audrey loves to sing, dance and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Wall ordered the puppet from a maker in California after being inspired by 13-year-old ventriloquist Darci Lynne.

"I fell in love with Darci from 'America's Got Talent,'" said Wall.

The 13-year-old captured hearts nationwide after auditioning with her witty bunny companion, Petunia. Wall was so inspired that she searched for one of Lynne's puppet makers and found the Axtell Group. After ordering the puppet, the ventriloquist said it took two months for the ostrich to arrive at her home in Knightdale.

Once the puppet arrived, Wall put much thought into a name that would be appropriate for the character. She finally decided on the name Audrey Twinkle Toes.

"I woke up one morning, and I was thinking of Audrey Hepburn," she said.

She combined the first name Audrey with the name given to the ostrich by her maker and Audrey Twinkle Toes was born.

But, the ostrich's personality doesn't follow the legacy of the glamorous Hollywood star. Wall said Audrey is a very traditional southern girl.

"She's a real 'I'll tell you one thing' kind of girl," Wall said.

Since she is fairly new to Wall's puppet collection, Audrey's personality is still developing.

"I have other puppets, but Audrey is my favorite," said Wall.

One thing is certain: Audrey has great taste in holiday music.

Wall said the ostrich loves to dance and sing along to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas Is You." The puppet also loves to dance and sing with local children.

She performs at her church and at various elementary schools.

"I'm a child at heart," said Wall. "It makes you feel good to entertain children."

The ventriloquist also performs with Audrey at nursing homes and said the nursing home residents seem to really enjoy the 6-foot-tall character.

She eventually hopes to perform at birthday parties and in front of large crowds.

"I would like to get out and entertain," said Wall.

She also hopes to run Audrey through stores for the holiday season.
