Even while everyone else thinks nothing has really changed, quote by Megan Devine Good evening everyone, thank you so much for coming out this evening. We are here to honor the life of officer brian Hayward. I thank those of you that have come from the nightingale community and I think all of you that have come from outside of the nightingale community, we know we have many members here that have come a long way to share their respects and we thank you for coming. I do ask in respect that everyone silenced their cellphones before we, before we begin tonight's service. In respect. I would like to ask our town council to come up on stage with me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Mm I am mayor Jessica Day and I'd like to share my comments and impact this amazing man has made on our community. While I did not get the chance to know him personally, the council and I did get the chance to meet him at his swearing in ceremony. I believe that things happen for a reason and I believe the sole purpose for that night was to give us a chance to meet him to see his smile and to feel his energy. We knew that he would make a major impact on our community. He certainly has and he certainly will continue to do so In his 23 years, he has touched so many lives. He's touched so many families. He's actually touched the family. My family in a memorable act of kindness and I'd like to share a story that I've shared with the family. I showed my father his picture and my father said that's the officer, that's the offer, the officer that I told you about. So he came home one day and he said that his light was on in his car. He pulled over in a parking lot to see what was wrong. He pulled the hood up, he was looking under the car and one of our night dale police officers came by just to check on him just to see if you're okay just to see if there's anything that we could do. My father said, your Police department is amazing in what they're doing in the town of night do and that was because of brian's refugee reputation. I thank him for that. And when he told me that story, I connected quickly and I said, I know that was Ryan because all the stories that I have heard ever since that moment from members of the community, members of our Police Department, members of his church, those that knew him growing up growing up, all of them shared his kindness, his spirit, his compassion. He was truly a kind and loving being, he represented everything we want to see in our police officers and more Officer Hayworth served our country and is a veteran of the United States Army and then he committed his career to serve our community. Although he was only with us for three months. He made our community better. We here and I do will have a lasting legacy officer. Hey, work comes from a law enforcement family. His father, retired police chief Tim Hayward is a pillar of this community, right to the family brian was the great man that he was because of you. I want to share a quote by Annette J done leah brief never ends. But it changes. It's a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love. There is an outpouring of love um kelly lisa. We recognize okay that you are heartbroken because you have lost your son. Mhm. Never lose sight of the fact that it's okay to agree. It's okay to cry. It's okay to mourn because we were crying with you, we are mourning with you and we are grieving with you As time begins to heal that physical pain, take comfort in knowing Ryan will always be a part of your life and he will always be remembered. This tragedy reiterates the importance of public safety in our community as advocates for public safety. I would like to remind you that north Carolina has a move over law in our traffic code. This law is designed to protect our law enforcement, our fire department emergency responders and utility workers by requiring motorists to slow down and move to the left of any scene where they are present. According to the national poll of mason Dixon polling 90% believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders, But only 29%. No of them move over law. This means that 71 percent of americans have not heard of or not aware of. Some that could save lives on the, from the town count and the staff. We will ensure that this legislation is enacted fully is enforced and that those who violate this law are punished accordingly. two members of our law enforcement community, we often take for granted the risk associated with the work you do on a daily basis. You risk your lives every time you put on your uniform and you go out. We want you to know, we see you, hey, different boards imposing. We are here to remember our fallen officer brian Hayward and to support his family. Nightingale is a wonderful community illegal, but I'm so proud. See? Yeah. And how our town has rallied around them, it's important and we want you to know family that we love you. We love yourself. We love this community and we are here for you. If there is anything that we can do for you. So you're here for Thank you like a small on the ocean. Something bad way Yeah. In emotion like I was single. Why make a hard, oh, I might only have one you can make against ocean. All those things are dancing for everyone. Sad. My brain sleep tonight. Can you hear my boss? This is my Yeah. You know. Yes. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Right. Nice For me. Yeah. Yeah. Your breathing. Yes. Yes. Mhm This is my yeah. Yeah. Okay. Mhm Okay. Mhm. Mhm Yes. On the other shoes sending back way in the motion Like how we say you are heart open. I'm, I only have one match but can they get explode? This is my fast. Yeah. Not telling. Yeah. Mhm. Mhm Yeah. Mm. You know, I still that silence. Yeah, yeah yeah. Mhm. We will now have a personal testimony from captain Andy Murray of the rally. Police department. He's also a deacon at face back his church, their families longstanding members of faith factors church And he's a very close family members. I would like to share a few words about crying 1st. I'd like to thank mayor day. Might help. Yeah, no police cat and the capitals others who had a hand in putting this together. Also thinking beautiful being fully great fun course Washington D. C. There's a national memorial perform on the marble walls of that memorial and then there's two huge lines Yeah doors. It is not how these here not how these officers than being a hero. He's telling this evening we gather in the diversity united community to honor officer Ryan they work for the life we live. Yeah I had the privilege of not only serving in the same noble profession the doctor but also I was privileged to serve with Ryan at the same church here count him as a close friend on what Yeah. Mhm We knew he was an extraordinary young man, his whole personality and passion. He was a bit of good law like to have fun, always smiling but he was always respectful get a maturity about and the way it conducted he was faithful in church attendance and participation as brian as Ryan grew through his teenage years we got to know him so much better as he became a close friend to both of water brian within our, I always find out my wife was making like chicken chili. I usually get in the first ball and tell them to get back in line brian was to raise the spirits of those around him. He had person, he was comfortable with the jokes being about him, maybe he had so much vitality, so much enthusiasm. It was in his teenage years that he began to exhibit his committee to a life of service. This certainly would not surprise anyone with the family he was in his family includes dedicated nurse. All right. You know, very and then his father who has served as the chief of police in recent retired 30 years but isn't in his teens, Ryan begins serving other his lack of service on his church. Youth messenger become two. He chose to go serve others in several different states, way across the country and even in other countries he had a compassion brother who was dedicated the same year. He graduated from high school. Ryan listed an army National Guard and serve honorably as an american soldier. His life of service including all the challenges, determination, discipline. Yeah, require our country's military leaders to persevere and succeed as a soldier. He's team player. Goodwin is unit always got good reviews. He had ignored himself as like given this, he was deployed to kuwait during operation enduring freedom where he courageously and honestly served his country stateside during hurricane IDa. His unit was called up brian was one of the first two soldiers to arrive for duty and that was his commitment to life And Ryan was in B L E T or basic law enforcement training which is the education process to be certified to be a sworn law enforcement officer in the state. He would often tell me or really anyone who would listen what he was doing, what they were going through. I was at the marina firearms have been driving constitutional law whatever. Every time I saw the church, I wanted to know he wanted to France falls for a career in law enforcement. He did not wish to try to overdo it for a little while brian knew he was fearfully and wonderfully created for a life of service that included a career as a police officer. It was all he was exuberant and with this past because after getting hired by the night for the police department, it was even more excited And either which I did not think was possible, saw him at church or elsewhere. Ryan would tell me about his first arrest. The most exciting Polly had that weekend. Have we? What he learned something was interesting or funny. We shared stories and brought back from my mind. Okay, all right. Always had such a smile, BRian's life was violently taken much too the extraordinary caliber brian and the person he was and his commitment to a life of service. Make this pain, the pain of this tragedy almost unbearable to hispanic, close friends. But we share a common faith in a loving god and we know that we will see Ryan again and that is what allows us to do those closest to him will hurt for a long and we will never forget it tonight. We honor BRian's life of service and as a community who valued it for the commitment it was. We said thanks again. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and support for the family. Been overwhelming. Sister Minnie or Mhm. And also the number. So we thank you for it. We have got to win. Mhm. Now we will have a few comments our Police Chief Chief Lawrence Cap. We thank him for his leadership and his dedication Especially during least 10 times. Yeah, good evening ladies and gentlemen, we don't know this. My name's Lauren caps at the very distinct honor serving chief law enforcement officer working alongside some of the finest. Mhm. Ever met in my entire life on behalf of the Edwards family, half of the night help Police department. I'd like to thank you for giving some of your time to help us on our the life, the legacy officer Ryan paperwork. I want you to know that our department has been absolutely long away by the outpouring of love and support from this community. It has been nothing short reward. We are so great for all of the compassion the kindness of your shots recently. Okay, it means more than I can possibly express and would be hard pressed to begin naming names for identifying all of the people or entities will come out of the woodwork. Show their appreciation of Orion and the sacrifice target. I also want to take a moment to recognize also co became Cody. We're so glad that you're here with us. I hope that you can receive what I'm getting ready. Your colleagues were found this entire community is so thank that you survived. We love him. We're praying for you and we are wishing you the species of I believe that Ryan with one two. Mhm Yeah. Mhm To the family I am in oh to have been asked to share and Ryan I don't feel worthy. What I'm about to share will actually echo his sentence conversations that Ryan and I had in recent months brian was very much idea and I was immediately drawn to him and his personality. Yeah was easy to see that we have a lot of few things. Very theory. It's what mayor of Congress I hope that when I get ready to share would be a fitting tribute to him that I believe you in class. Uh huh The lake broadcaster and radio personality paul harvey once remarked that a police officer is a an extraordinary minutes positive many different mingling center in ST does the deal a person who is simultaneously the most needed and the most replied yeah. The person who must know where the trouble and the ice exists. Think of it a nameless figure who must serve as a diplomat. The Minister Social worker first I can say with confidence that many of these words describe. Mhm. In my estimation however I would describe or is the same concerns more deity than does he was most definitely needed by this department in this community. But because of the way that he carried himself, I care anybody that ever So he yeah, he performed the duties of counselor guardian minister and peacemaker as well as anyone I've ever seen. He ones as paul partner double Orion was not a nameless figure carrying only an official title or a bureaucratic label. He was uh huh a friend and colleague. He was a helper to his fellow man and he was more I believe devoted. So from impact. Ryan's entire life was a reflection. Two great commandments to love the Lord with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your strength, all of your mind and to love your neighbor. As simple as it may sound. This is Ryan story. His desire to be like christ guided him to serve others and focus on caring for others in a way that christ commanded this. They allow him to develop and cultivate the attributes of respect, integrity, dedication. So is it any wonder then that he committed to serving our nation, the United States? Are you truly surprised that Ryan would thrust himself into the role of the police or that he would do either of these things? And one of the most trying to Yeah, it shouldn't surprise it actually makes perfect sense issue. Right. Mhm. For those of you that know anything about agencies, core beliefs. Okay, hear that Ryan's values perfectly aligned with and because of that his selfless service to our community to his colleagues, please was virtually ensured. In fact go so far as to say that it was divinely ordained brian's story is important. A story is similar to that of the men and women who are standing nearby in uniform. In fact, if you will indulge me, take them off, I want you to lock on is with the police officer that's nearest to you right now. Take a few seconds to see beyond the badge and ponder their true. I think officer take a moment to look at the person who's standing attitude, dismissing preconceived notions that you might have or that the world tells us to have about what that person is, who they should be, what they just let your mind absorb an undeniable truth that Ryan, we will all of the okay person that you is just complex. We are all pop he makes it both parts and flattering characters imperfect people, you fall short of the perfect town, Ryan would also want you to know that we possess equal value inside of our creator. And Ryan Would be the 1st 1 to remind you that we all have a responsibility to, to the community out of singles brian or secured Sure he was your, that was he was an extension of your four he wielded in your trust and he committed himself to serving your interests. The same is true for every man and woman in uniform standing here, you're right and hold on because from this moment forward, every time you pass a police car, every time you see the flashing blue lights, every time you come in contact with an officer remember that they the hard part chances already offering from the officer in front of you possesses the same dedication and the willingness to sort of this is right, honor that Ladies and gentlemen and Ryan's legacy little through the officers, especially the ones from the nightingale police department, you know what I am getting ready. My challenge to you has never changed. You are ambassadors and guardians for the people standing so your allegiance To our five rules lost. Yeah, but like Ryan you must continue to embrace our mission. Remember why you exist in 4 3 like Ryan, you must be a person honestly tell you what Sure yes. When the truth comes with its own set of cards, you need to tell the truth. Like Ryan, you must continuously align your behaviors, your speech, you thought your actions with our core values like Ryan you must honor your made a solemn promise to protect the ideals of this work of public and faithfully served this community and the people around don't break that promise and like Ryan you must commit to getting the very best of yourself to everything into everyone. His job was never about Ryan knew that and we remember the way that he did his legacy who live on folks. We are not as separated as you might think, certainly not as separated as the world that lead us to believe also they were recognized that we are different members the same body brian lives just sort of the body for you, for you. If not then ask yourself why and if this reflection challenges if you find that you are missing the mark, if you discover that you want to better serve the body that you are part of. It's not too late. If you need an example of all of put them for you for nine years we can't these answers. We are committed. Reshaped the please. Mhm. Yeah we learn we are here for I can't offer easy explanation. Makes sense of tragedy. That's so far beyond they're working and I bring that are heavily hollow flooding arms in the coming days. Watch a friend that he was part of europe and in time like that he feels your parts. Yeah cherish happiness. God bless you all. Yeah. Yeah. Mhm. Mhm. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Mhm. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Well what is being like a wet animal? Sure. I know the imagination. I can only imagine mm surrounded by your Laurie. What will my heart field. Will I dance for, jesus In all of you will stand in your presence to my knees will have all Will I sing? I do not be able to escape it all that it might be a pressure
