Knightdale man charged in assault with broom

A Knightdale man was arrested on charges that he beat another man with a broom handle, according to an arrest warrant.

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A Knightdale man was arrested on charges that he beat another man with a broom handle, according to an arrest warrant.

The warrant says that Sean Lamar Melvin, 22, of 5017 Cottage Bluff Lane, assaulted Bragston Benton on June 21, 2009. No other details were available.

Melvin was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Wake County jail under a $50,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.

Melvin was sentenced to probation for a 2006 conviction for conspiracy to commit armed robbery, according state Department of Correction records. He spent a year in prison for a probation violation and another seven months for a post-release violation.
