RICHMOND, VA. — Changes have been made after a Virginia woman was injured by a flying cellphone while on a rollercoaster at Kings Dominion.

It’s been a long eight weeks for Reann Mayfield, as the nearly 2-inch gash across her forehead healed after a cellphone hit her while riding Twisted Timbers at Kings Dominion. Now, new signs have been put up near the ride, leaving her hopeful for the future.

“It’s going to be wonderful, because now people can rest at ease knowing that their children can go on the rides and be safe and no articles are going to be flying out from other individuals' pockets,” Mayfield said.

A spokeswoman said the new signs placed in front of the rollercoaster are meant to “further clarify and reinforce our loose article policy.”

The sign says, in part, that “absolutely no cellphones” are allowed on the ride.

In June, Mayfield was riding Twisted Timbers when a cellphone fell out of another rider’s pocket and hit her in the forehead. Mayfield is recovering, but it’s been a long process.

“The headaches did stop after a couple of weeks, so that was very helpful. Now it’s just healing, so I’m waiting for it to be 100 percent healed,” she said.

Following the accident, Mayfield contacted Kings Dominion, asking for a refund for her season passes, saying she wouldn’t be going back this season due to concerns for her safety.

“They had stated they were apologetic for what had happened. They made it right,” Mayfield said.

The spokeswoman for Kings Dominion did not say when the signs were put up, but Mayfield feels her accident played a part in the decision.

“I still love rollercoasters. It’s just, I guess I was looking for it to be made right, and it was in my eyes because they made a rule that will keep other people safe,” she said.
