Kids amaze me. They really do. Time and time again, it seems like the youngest among us are the first in line to help their community.

The other weekend, Will and his band of buddies spent part of their time picking up trash on the playground at their school. It wasn’t punishment. They weren’t forced to do it. They were asked and they showed up.

That same Saturday, I spent the morning following school children who were cleaning up a stream in Raleigh. I was there for a work project. They were there because they genuinely care about their community. One 5-year old little boy told me: “We need to make sure we keep our water healthy.”

It seems as if there are always people who are quick to dole out criticism of the next generation. However, what I see is young people willing to stand up and lean in and lift up our community.

Whether it’s small acts like picking up trash in their community or perhaps bigger undertakings like organizing a 5k to raise money for a community garden or even, yes, a march on Washington to demand a safer future for all of us, it should fill all of our hearts with pride and hope.

Julia Sims is the mom of one and a former reporter for WRAL-TV, who now works for the city of Raleigh. She regularly appears here on Go Ask Mom.
