DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County Chief District Court Judge Marcia Morey was named Thursday to fill the late Rep. Paul Luebke's state House seat.

Luebke died in late October of lymphoma, and Rep. Phil Lehman, D-Durham, was tapped shortly before the Nov. 8 election to fill his seat temporarily.

Durham County Democratic Party officials picked Morey from among five candidates. Gov. Roy Cooper still must formally name her to the seat.

Morey, who has served on the bench for nearly 18 years, was a driving force behind Durham County's misdemeanor diversion program, which gives 16- and 17-year-olds charged with certain misdemeanors a second chance.
