GODWIN, N.C. — A Cumberland County judge has determined that a rest home resident charged with killing his roommate is incapable of standing trial.

Police charged Mencie Grimes, 60, with second-degree murder after his roommate, Levi Montgomery, was found dead on Dec, 27 in the men's room at Countryside Villa Nursing Home in Godwin.

Authorities said the roommates got into an argument that turned violent. There was no word on what sparked the dispute.

An autopsy determined that Montgomery, 69, had been strangled.

Grimes has Alzheimer's disease, and a judge has committed him to Central Regional Hospital in Butner. He will be evaluated there to determine whether he can eventually stand trial.
