ASHEVILLE, N.C. — North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein on Thursday sued HCA Healthcare, alleging the for-profit healthcare system is not providing quality, consistent emergency and cancer care for people in western North Carolina.

HCA operates multiple healthcare facilities, including Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Stein released the following statement:

“For-profit HCA has broken its promise to the people of western North Carolina and to my office. Quality health care is too important – in some cases, a matter of life and death. But HCA apparently cares more about its profits than its patients."

HCA purchased Mission Health System in Asheville in 2019.

In recent years, North Carolina residents have submitted more than 500 complaints about HCA to the state Department of Justice regarding concerns about emergency and trauma services and oncology services.

One person wrote: “I was taken by ambulance to Mission Hospital emergency room. I never got into the ER because the paramedics literally couldn't get my gurney in the door. The entrance and hallways were jammed with gurneys...elderly people having trouble breathing, people bleeding, and no one helping them."
