FOUR OAKS, N.C. — A Four Oaks couple has been charged with starving their 4-month-old son.

Amanda Leigh Baker, 31, and Daniel Paul Baker, 29, both of 4745 Strickland's Crossroads Road, were charged Monday with negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

According to arrest warrants, they "fail[ed] to provide adequate food for growth and ... provide attention' to the boy, who suffered from a "flat skull" as a result.

Authorities launched an investigation more than two months ago, when the baby was taken to a Raleigh hospital suffering from malnourishment.

Once the charges were filed against the Bakers, the couple turned themselves in and quickly posted bond, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

The 4-month-old, as well as an older child the couple had, were in state custody Wednesday night.

A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said he didn't know the Bakers personally, but said he was disheartened by the thought of them mistreating their little boy.

The couple is scheduled to appear in Johnston County court in two weeks.
