SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A jury on Thursday convicted a Pine Level man in the shooting death of his lifelong friend almost two years ago.

Stefan Gudac, 25, was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the Nov. 27, 2010, death of Devin Barber. He was sentenced to 64 to 86 months in prison.

Gudac told a 911 dispatcher that he had shot Barber, 20, of Smithfield, after Barber refused to leave Gudac’s home.

He initially had been charged with first-degree murder in the case.
