PRINCETON, N.C. — The North Carolina Industrial Commission will offer a free driving-safety course to Johnston County teens Nov. 6. The four-hour course is available to teens ages 15-19 from 5-9 p.m. at Smithfield Town Hall, 50 E. Market St. in the council room. For details or to reserve a place in the class, call 919-934-2116.

A commission representative said the high rate of teen fatalities in the county prompted plans for the free class. Johnston County leads the state in auto-related teen deaths, officials say.

In addition to the class, Johnston County sheriff's deputies have stepped up patrols around high schools, looking for teens speeding or driving recklessly. Representatives of the sheriff's office are talking with the Johnston County school district about other educational programs to try to reduce speeding and reckless driving.
