SELMA, N.C. — A Johnston County man was sent to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill after a race car he was working on exploded.

Officials with the Johnston County Fire Department said they responded to a call on Saturday in a residential neighborhood on 910 River Run Road near Princeton Kenly Road in Selma, not far from Micro. Citizens reported hearing an explosion and seeing a large black cloud of smoke.

According to officials, the man, who has not yet been identified, was working on the race car and was driving it back to a trailer when it exploded. Officials believe some sort of fuel leak led to the explosion, which damaged a building and the home next to it.

The man was taken to Johnston Medical Center before being transported to the burn center. An investigation into the explosion is being conducted.
