SELMA, N.C. — A Johnston County sheriff's deputy was injured in a crash early Monday morning.

Officials said the deputy was on his way to work in his patrol vehicle when he drove off the roadway, struck a driveway culvert and was sent airborne before crashing into a ditch on Phillips Road around 5:30 a.m.

Airbags and a seat belt protected him from serious injuries, but he was transported to an area hospital, officials said.

No other cars were involved.
