MICRO, N.C. — A Johnston County deputy was injured and a woman was killed in a crash on Saturday.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 301, near Micro.

Troopers said Johnston County Deputy Quinton Rhue, 24, was traveling north with blue lights and siren activated responding to a call for service.

As Rhue's Dodge Charger approached traffic and began to pass on the left, a GMC Sonoma driven by Shirley James, 63, slowed down and tried to turn left as the deputy was passing. The front-right corner of the patrol car made contact with the driver's door of the truck.

Officials said Rhue was extricated from his heavily damaged patrol car and taken with serious injuries to a local hospital.

James died at the scene of the crash.

The road was closed near Bagley Road for several hours as law enforcement investigated the crash.
