BENSON, N.C. — A traffic stop in Johnston County on Monday evening led to a chase that ended in Harnett County.

A State Highway Patrol trooper said a Johnston County deputy initiated a traffic stop around 4:45 p.m. on N.C. Highway 50 in Benson, near Zack Mills Road.

The driver of a three-wheeled Can Am motorcycle then drove off. Troopers said the person was driving at high rates of speed during the chase.

The chase ended about 15 miles away on Pearidge Road, near Angier, in Harnett County when the driver hit a tree and was thrown from the morotcycle.

Troopers said there was one person dead at the scene but did not provide any other information.
