CARY, N.C. — Former second lady Jill Biden made a brief stop in Cary on Election Day.

Biden, the wife of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, popped by the polling site at Mills Park Elementary School to greet voters and thank poll workers.

"Our next first lady," someone shouted, eliciting cheers from the crowd outside the site.

"Thank you everybody for your support. You have no idea how much this means to me and Joe," she responded. "This is your campaign. That's what's going to change, hopefully tonight – a new direction in America, a new leadership."

She said the campaign was "taking no vote for granted," calling North Carolina "critical" to her husband's chances.

"We've been on this campaign trail for, gosh, a year and a half, so now it's down to the final hours," she said. "I love the support of the American people. I think they're ready for change."

Joe Biden campaigned in his childhood home of Scranton, Pa., and Philadelphia on Tuesday before heading home to Wilmington, Del., where he planned to address the nation. Biden held more campaign stops in Pennsylvania than any other state during his campaign.

After barnstorming five states on Monday, including North Carolina, President Donald Trump visited his campaign headquarters in Virginia on Tuesday before monitoring the election results from the White House. The president ended his campaign around midnight in Grand Rapids, Mich., attracting thousands of supporters.
