RALEIGH, N.C. — As JCPenney closes its doors at North Hills in Raleigh, 110 employees will be laid off, according to a state commerce department document.

According to a North Carolina Department of Commerce summary of Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications, or WARN notices, 110 employees will be laid off by April 24.

The commerce department received JCPenney’s WARN notice on Feb. 12, according to the summary.

In an email sent to customers on Jan. 17, JCPenney said its North Hills store would close in April.

The email indicated that the company was looking for employment opportunities for their associates at other store locations.

Kristen Bennett, a JCPenney spokesperson, said in an email to WRAL in August: "This decision is the result of an ongoing review of our store portfolio, which includes assessing locations that may not meet our required financial targets or represent an opportunity to capitalize on a beneficial real estate asset. It’s never easy taking actions that directly impact our valued associates and customers, however we feel this is a necessary business decision."
