James Russell Capps, longtime NC lawmaker, dies at 89

A former member of the N.C. House of Representatives has died after a brief battle with cancer.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former member of the N.C. House of Representatives has died after a brief battle with cancer.

James Russell Capps died Tuesday at the age of 89. He represented the 41st House District, which includes Morrisville and portions of Apex Cary and Raleigh.

The Republican served six terms and was a reporter at WRAL News in the 1970s.

According to his obituary, Capps attended Murphy Elementary School and Hugh Morson High School in the Oakwood neighborhood of Raleigh. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1956 with a degree in sociology.

Capps is survived by his wife, daughter, son, stepson and several grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Capps' name to the Christian Action League of North Carolina.
