Duke lineman, Jacob Monk talks about the Duke loss to Notre Dame on Saturday night.  

Uh yeah, like you said, a tough loss, um just hats off to another day and they played an outstanding game, really physical front, 7-Up, front. But um, like you said, coming out in the second half, we wanna establish the run game. So that, that was the point of emphasis coming out. Yeah, I mean, for sure, we knew like it looked like it was just like one second off from something popping and uh we just knew we had to keep going, keep going, keep talking at it. And uh later on the second half, it did we talk about the running game, second half or just one on one, a little bit of both, you know. Um Yeah, doing your job, I would say doing your job all the time to be in this position to play in these kind of circumstances. Um Yeah, I mean, it's, it's crazy seeing from where we came, you know, I was on the same team that lost to Charlotte, but um the loss is a loss no matter what and it hurts all the same. Jacob being one of the leaders on this team. How do you plan on leading by example, and to aspire to have your team ready to just come back in executing state. Uh Just keep, you know, turn up and I try to keep doing what we're doing um attacking each day uh because you got to use it to our advantage. Uh NC state is a really good team. Uh We got to get extra film in really good to get extra film in some, some more lifts and, uh just practice really hard over this biweekly. Um We, uh we have full trust in Brian Parker and all the rest of the offensive linemen um to come in and do their job and if you look at the film, you know, I, I believe Brian played a really good game. So, uh I mean, it doesn't matter, you know, um it's definitely not a good feeling you're going to buy the, you definitely wanna come and play someone again. But, uh, you know, it's the way the schedule is set up so we'll use it to our advantage, you know. Uh Yeah, I mean, just letting him know I'm always there for him. Um I slipped up last play of the game and lit up the sack. Uh, you know, you win some, you lose some, but I feel like as a captain, I can't let that happen. So I just let him know I'm here for him. Always. You talk about sort of the game that you play and that was a lot of hard out there for the way that, you know. Yeah. I mean, you know what you're gonna get from Leonard. Just a dog at heart.

Duke center and returning starter Jacob Monk talks about the experience the Blue Devils have on the offensive line at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.

Were locked on AC C between yourself and Graham Barton. This is supposed to be one of the best offensive line units coming back in the nation in terms of experience in terms of you playing every position, tackle guard and center starting 10 games or more at all of them. How do you handle those expectations? And what are you looking forward to in terms of this offensive line, taking a step forward in this new season, just going to work each and every day? That's the only thing that we can do. That's the only thing that we know how to do. We're built on being tough physical and just playing hard. So each and every day just go to work, keep our head down and really believe in ourselves, Jacob from the podium. You played just about every position on the offensive line. Does it help you at center? Understand what everybody else is doing because you have been in those positions, especially like being on a tackle and look and see, I like the safety tool that's definitely easier to understand from being on the outside and going to the center and looking at that and just making a lot of calls that benefit to tackling guards is something that has helped me at center. I would say to your right second row royal Howe Carolina Blitz. Um Can you just speak on, what do you think are the pros and cons of having the N A for college athletes? Um pros, I would say, uh athletes are getting paid, um something that I feel like should be done and uh cons I don't really know, I would say maybe some regulations towards it, but I don't really know. Going to get a microphone to the right side gentleman with the white stripe on the blue shirt. Thank you, Scout Hughes WBRF, Jacob, talk about your relationship with your father as he played at Duke. And what role has he played in your career? Um Anyone who's been to a new game has definitely seen my father in the stands, the most excited person in the stands and on the field, I would say, but um I mean, I love that man to death. I love him and my mother both behind the scenes doing everything for me. Um He is my greatest motivator. Um sends me text every morning saying, you know, go to work, you're good. You got this. Keep going, keep grinding. Just do what I need to do to get forward each and every day to your right fourth row. Ken Gibbs were locked on AC C. Um We talked a lot about you and Barton and everybody gives you to the praise and all that and the adulation for this offensive line. But who else in this unit is somebody or somebody that you're looking at and saying, hey, these guys are just as effective. They get the job done just as well. If we need a hole open, we can go behind them the same. You go behind either one of us. I mean, anyone on the offensive line, I would say Maurice mcintyre, Jake Hor, Brian Parker, Matt Craycraft, all these guys, Justin Pickett, all these guys are just dudes on the offensive line. They're what you want. Tough guys don't complain. Keep your head down to his work and uh yeah, stay on the right side, right on the edge. Second row. Terrence Hatchet, Carolina Blitz, Jacob coach spoke on it earlier, but from a player's perspective, knowing that you have a big game on Labor Day stand alone game, national TV. Do you relish the opportunity to showcase the nation? What Duke football is about for people who still might be sleeping on Duke? Definitely. I mean, this whole off season and last off season, we've been embracing the underdog role. We're not here to fight it out. We're not here to stay the court, we're here to win. That's what we're, that's what we're here to do. We're not here to uh go the distance, we want to win. We're not here for the praise or anything or just play ball do? Thank you very much. Good. How are you doing to the school? Hi TV. All right, Jacob. Start us off. Jacob first. Tell us about your decision to come back to last year. What were they doing? Um, so I decided myself after the Kansas game, I was gonna come back and then after the UN C game, I went up to, uh, Coach O after one of the meetings and I let him know like it doesn't stay right with me. So I know that we have a lot left to prove and just excited to be back. But what's different this year than last year? Um, spring, I'm sorry, what? Spring ball, boy, spring ball last year, new coach, new system, new everything. And now you've got a year in new system, what's different? I would say, uh, we're just comfortable, you know, we're, uh, comfortable in the system that we've had in place for a year now. But also we're just still hungry, like you would think after a year like that people would ease up. But I mean, we're, we're working harder as hard, as hard as ever and I just ready to keep going. What, what position are you still right everywhere. Today I played center tomorrow. I'll probably played tackle guard. I don't know. But anyway, all I know there was some of the more experienced guys out. They give kids for some of the younger guys to step up and show what they can do. What you see is some of the young office one and they have stood out and just for one practice. Look. Um, all of them have looked so good. I would say uh from Brian Parker and Matt Craycraft, Steven Naus and the mid years as well. Um And Dustin Holley looks really good. Jake Warner Brook and Mike Purcell, they all look really good. So, um I'm really excited to see how they play this year, tremendous success last year with the gratitude you mentioned 20. Now you expecting that, that level of contribution from from this year. Yeah, definitely. I mean, they're, they're definitely ready to come in and fill in and play right away. They're doing well. So I'm excited. I didn't know it would take this long. I mean, that was always my goal from um day one even before I got here was to have a winning program. And uh now that it's here, it's, I don't ever want to go back to what it was before. How do you guys kinda go about, you know, about taking success for it? You know, I think it's a lot of things. Um The first thing being we don't ever want to feel that feeling again that we felt for my first three years here. Um just of constant losing and also just like it's ingrained in us at this point, you know, we want to get better. We're still hungry. There's still doubts out there that we want to prove wrong. We want to prove ourselves right at the same time. So that's what goes into it, anti profiles know as well. But Labor Day night, this Sunday in Europe, that's part of a very difficult schedule. I have to face a lot as a player. I mean, I love it. That's what, you know, as a kid, you dream of, you dream of playing under big, big playing against big names under the lights uh on the spotlight, national television. That's what you dream of. That's a great opportunity for this program to elevate itself. And you know, we're just, we're, we're ready for it at this time. I work, we kept hearing this physicality. We take care of that one to establish that as a default. You were gonna be more physical than the other game, game after game after game. That just kind of the baseline now that I think so. Yeah, I feel like we're tougher than everyone. I feel like we're more physical than everyone. We, I feel like we have the talent, we have the strength. Um But I feel like no one does what we do in this weight room on the field. We no one does what we do conditioning wise. So I feel like we're just more prepared than everyone else. Like we see a lot on social media breaking records. I'm sorry, I said, what are we gonna see on social media? Are we gonna see a lot of video of breaking school and personal weightlifting records when you go in and look around the skilled guys that you have around, I'm sure it makes you, you get the skilled guys. We really do. I mean, there are guys that I played with for many years from Jalen Coleman, Jordan Waters, Jalea who Eli Paco and then the younger guys, but have also played a season like Jordan, um, Moore Samir Higgins and of course Riley Leonard. So, I mean, it, it makes our job easy when we have guys like that.

Monk: We are still hungry

Jacob, I'll ask you from here at the podium. Your father was a four year letter winner at Duke. What's it been like for you to also play the uh, it's really been a dream come true. You know, growing up watching football and seeing how the facilities have just changed from being a tracker on the field and I was going to games. Uh, actually, you know, running out of the tunnel on Saturdays. It's really a dream come true. First road right in front of you, to your left in Tora. Tora, wake up call DT dot com. Jacob, sometimes being an offensive lineman is a thankless job. What can you say about having that role and how you feel on this team leading it forward and, and if being an offensive lineman for you has almost made a chip on your shoulder knowing that the credit typically goes to quarterbacks and running backs. You don't always hear about the offensive line. Um, really it's just, it is whatever to me. You know, I don't really need credit. I just enjoy playing the game of football and you know, the biggest step for an offense line is a win. So it's just, you know what we work for each and every day, Jacob began here at the podium on July one, you retweeted a duke weight room video and you added a one word catching net red culture, what did you mean by that? Um, that's I feel like what that video stood for is how this culture has changed. Um, there's been a high placement on competition right now? Uh, there's rewards for winning, there's consequences for losing and you know, we're just learning how to love to win and hate to lose right now. We'll get a microphone back to the second road to your left Tommy Caroline. So much of the wave of stuff has been amplified on social media, how have you seen results from the weight room translates on field stuff throughout the spring and summer. Okay. How have you seen production the way that translates to on field? Just because there's been such an emphasis on it all. Um, I mean, you know, this is what we work for. You know, it's never did work for results for on the field, we're gonna see how that's gonna turn out in august and on september and during the season, but you know, that's the common goal is, you know, just work as hard as you can this summer to spring this winter for those results to show up in the fall, Jacob your last question and fill in the blank for us, this will be a successful year for the online if if we're consistent. Um you know, I think that we had a decent year last year. I feel like it's a good place to build off of, we're bringing back four of the five starters from last year and we just need to be consistent and everything that we do consistently tough, consistently physical, communicate consistently and I think it would be in good shape
