Jackie Hyland: Ready for summer

It's almost here! My favorite time of year. School is almost out for the summer! I can't wait. It means my girls are home for the summer! I'm truly excited! I know some of you won't believe me, but let me explain why!

I have worked in the television news business now for 20 years. Most of those years I have worked night side. So that means when my daughters get home from school, I am not there. I am also not there in the evenings to go to volleyball practice or help with homework.

I do call them but, let's face it, that is just not the same. I also see them briefly most mornings before they head off to school, but it's not the best time to sit down for a chat! I understand they are in a hurry, getting ready for their day. The last thing they want to do is sit down and chat with mom!

So that is why summertime is very important to me. I get to see my girls in the morning before I go to work! Sometimes we get to do things together like shopping or swimming. I know it may not sound like a big deal but, as my girls get older, I realize how important summer is to me.

I always say to my daughters that it's the little things in life that make a difference and just knowing I get to see them each day before going to work makes a big difference in my day!
