It's been 30 years since an EF-4 tornado ripped through Raleigh
Wednesday marks the 30th anniversary of a fatal overnight tornado in Raleigh.
Posted — UpdatedOn November 28, 1988, a single deadly tornado touched down in Raleigh just after midnight. The tornado killed four people, including two children, in Raleigh and injured more than 150 people.
The tornado reached maximum intensity of EF-4 strength in northwestern and northern parts of Raleigh and remained on the ground for 84 miles.
The most intense damage occurred over northwestern Raleigh where the tornado traveled through densely populated areas near Glenwood Avenue and Lynn and Creedmoor Roads, according to the National Weather Service.
More than 2,000 homes sustained some damage resulting in nearly 1,000 residents becoming homeless. Losses totaled more than $75 million.
The tornado was one of the strongest on record in North Carolina.
