PENDER COUNTY, N.C. — A donkey rescued from floodwaters in Pender County during Hurricane Matthew gave birth to a baby girl over the weekend.

Jewel Horton, manager of the Pender County Animal Shelter, said the staff noticed the mama donkey was a bit bigger than the other two donkeys that were rescued when flooding struck the Black River Basin.

“We had our suspicions,” said Horton. “But the poor animal had suffered so much. However, the vet confirmed she was going to deliver within 10 days.”

The foal was name Mattie, after Hurricane Matthew. Horton said she is a miracle of life.

“I’m so proud of my community,” said Horton. “So many agencies came together to rescue animals from Hurricane Matthew’s flood.”
