NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A mother calmly capturing video of her 11-year-old daughter swimming in the Atlantic Ocean may have caught something more on camera.

Nicole Oister posted the video to Facebook and shared it with WMBF News. The family was visiting North Myrtle Beach from New York.

As the child body surfs, a fin approaches from the left. The girl quickly jumps up and runs from the water.

"Baby shark?" Oister wrote.

Sharks are common in the Atlantic Ocean off the Carolinas, but they rarely get close enough to shore to interact with people.

Experts recommend beachgoers swim with a buddy, stay close to the shore and avoid swimming at dawn or dusk. They also say to avoid swimming if there are fish or seals around, the prey that attract the predators.

In June, a 7-year-old girl was bitten by a shark off Ocean Isle Beach near the Concord Road access. Her injuries were minor.
