RALEIGH, N.C. — A new WalletHub study ranks Raleigh as the best city to drive in, in the country.

In their research, the company compared the 100 largest cities in 29 different areas, including hours spent in congestion and gas prices.

With all of that information factored in, the study found that Raleigh earned the top prize, but residents disagree.

Mickey Tripp, a driving instructor at Carolina Road Driving School, said he has been teaching the rules of the road for 25 years.

"There's places where traffic slows down to a crawl and at certain times of day, it's even worse," he said.

Tripp said his biggest issue is with the infrastructure.

"There's still no way that they can keep up with the Raleigh area. There's always going to be bottle necks. There's always going to be slow downs. As fast as they build roads, they are already behind," he said.

Day in and day out, WRAL's Brian Shrader monitors the thick of it all. So when asked, are Raleigh roads really the best? He said, "that is a really difficult question to answer because everybody's commute is so subjective."

Shrader says that he's noticed traffic conditions getting more difficult to navigate. He says Raleigh officials and residents should prepare to answer an important question.

"Do we continue to invest money in expanding roads, adding lanes, adding new lanes, or do we start thinking about public transit as a way to solve our congestion problems in the future," Shrader said.

Durham ranked number 7 on WallHub's list.
