<b>(CNN)</b> — A peaceful protest over a water shortage in the southern Iran city of Khorramshahr turned violent Saturday, after clashes between police and protesters broke out, Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

Police used tear gas to contain the crowd. Protesters responded by throwing stones and other objects, damaging public property, including the Holy Defense Museum and a local bridge.

Iran's interior minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told state media that one person was hospitalized with injuries and there were no fatalities.

The protests broke out due to a clean water shortage that has affected the city and nearby Abadan during the hot Iranian summer. Temperatures in the southern region can reach up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
