Iran executes eight men over last year's terror attacks in Tehran
Iran executed eight men convicted of terrorism for last year's twin attacks that left 17 people dead in Tehran, state media reported Saturday.
Posted — UpdatedThe executed men were arrested in the aftermath of the June 2017 incidents in which attackers mounted simultaneous gun and suicide bomb assaults on Iran's parliament building and the tomb of the republic's revolutionary founder, state-run Press TV reported.
The men were sentenced to death in May and executed Saturday, according to Iran's semiofficial Tasnim news agency.
Of the six attackers who died in the assault, five had previously fought with ISIS in Mosul and Raqqa, according to Iranian officials.
The assailants, apparently dressed as women, targeted the parliament buildings and the tomb with assault rifles, handguns and bombs. They killed security guards and civilians before taking hostages in the upper floors of the building.
Security forces killed some of the gunmen while others blew themselves up.
The ISIS media wing, Amaq, claimed "fighters with the Islamic State" carried out the attacks. It was the first time that ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack in Iran.
