GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after an inmate started a fire at the Wayne County Detention Center on Thursday afternoon.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate on the 2nd floor of the facility set fire to a mattress. Authorities are working to determine what the inmate used to start the fire and how he got the item into his cell.

Authorities said seven inmates were on the floor when the fire started and authorities were interviewing all of them Thursday afternoon.

The 2nd floor of the jail was placed under a brief lockdown as a result of the fire and all seven inmates were moved to a different floor, authorities said.

The fire was put out with a fire extinguisher and was contained to the area.

Authorities have not determined if the fire was part of an attempted escape plan.
