Carthage, N.C. — An inmate was found dead in the Moore County jail early Tuesday, Sheriff Ronnie Fields said.
Edward Dale Ager III, 37, previously of Vass, was found unresponsive in his cell, and detention officers weren't able to revive him, Fields said.
Ager had been in jail since July 2015, when he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson in connection with a fatal house fire in Southern Pines, authorities said.
The sheriff said he notified the State Bureau of Investigation of Ager's in-custody death and requested an independent inquiry.
