DURHAM, N.C. — An inmate was found dead in his cell on Sunday at the Durham County Detention Facility, according to the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

James Earl Staton Jr., 40, had been in the jail since June 15, charged with an armed robbery in Durham, authorities said.

Per standard practice, detectives are conducting a death investigation, but preliminary findings suggest Staton died of natural causes, authorities said.

The State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
