RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County Grand Jury returned indictments on Friday, charging an inmate in connection with the violent attack on a Central Prison employee earlier this summer.

Jaquan Lane, 23, is charged with assault on a state detention employee inflicting serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury.

Authorities said Lane assaulted Brent Soucier, a unit manager, on June 19.

According to investigators, Lane assaulted Soucier using his "hands and fists in a vicious and malicious surprise attack."

Soucier was seriously injured and was sent to the hospital. He was released from the hospital on July 13.

"We appreciate the hard work on this case by law enforcement, the district attorney and her office, as well as the grand jury," said Judge Reuben Young, interim chief deputy secretary for adult correction and juvenile justice. "The department will continue to fully cooperate with the investigators handling the very serious assault on Mr. Soucier and any additional criminal charges that may be forthcoming."

Lane is in prison for a Jan. 14, 2015 conviction for robbery with a dangerous weapon, with a scheduled release date of October 2020. He will remain in custody pending a trial on the new offenses.

Authorities said there may be additional charges.
