Inmate attacks NC correctional officer with shank
Authorities say an officer in a western North Carolina prison is in stable condition after he was attacked by an inmate with a homemade weapon.
Posted — UpdatedThe state Department of Public Safety said in a news release that the officer suffered multiple wounds in the attack Saturday night at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton.
Spokesman Jerry Higgins says the inmate attacked the officer with a shank. The inmate will be charged with assault.
Last year was the deadliest year in the history of the state's prison system.
It was later discovered by the National Institute of Corrections that the prison had a staffing vacancy of about 25 percent and was deemed unsafe to fully operate on the day of the attack. The team also found that most officers were minimally trained.
Prosecutors say they want the death penalty for an inmate accused of beating to death an officer at Bertie Correctional Institution last year.
