LAURINBURG, N.C. — A former supervisor at a wastewater treatment plant has been indicted on charges he illegally dumped sludge from the plant in nearby wetlands.

Gary Arnett was charged with contaminating a public water service.

Arnett used to work at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport. He resigned after state regulators began investigating the case.

Environmental officials said they believe the illegal dumping happened for several months in 2006. The airport paid nearly $200,000 in fines and clean-up costs.
