Posted — UpdatedWhen you are trying to get pregnant and dealing with secondary infertility, you have to pee on a lot of sticks. There are Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPK) and pregnancy tests. Ever since my last miscarriage, I haven't been showing any surge in LH (AKA Luteinizing hormone) on those OPK tests, so I have to get blood tests to determine when ovulation is occurring.
But for days five through 11 of my cycle, I still get up every morning and do a little (pee pee) dance while I try to unwrap the OPK test strips. I have even created a song for it:
Do a little dance, pee on a stick, get down tonight, get down tonight
Have you ever struggled to see LH surges on OPK strips? I've tried two different types and still nothing. My blood tests will however indicate a surge and ovulation. It just makes timing so much more difficult.
And while we are talking about peeing on a stick, when did you start testing for pregnancy following ovulation?
I usually try to wait until three days before the period is due, but I'm only successful if there isn't a test in the house. The minute there is a test in my house, I'm taking it.
My husband has joked that we need to buy tests in bulk, but I don't think Costco sells the early tests in bulk.
I think one of the hardest things about trying to get pregnant is the two-week wait. That stretch of time where you are hopeful and anything is possible. Are you pregnant or are you just feeling bloated because a period is coming? Every little symptom is amplified. And if you are taking fertility medication, your hormones are amped up so much you will feel pregnant when you aren't.
Your hormones are out of control, your body is feeling pregnancy of period symptoms and you have no clue if you are finally pregnant.
I am usually OK until the final week. Then, my mind starts racing at night and I can't sleep.
How do you handle the two week wait? Any tips for how to chill out?
