CARY, N.C. — A frantic mother was inside the H Mart in Cary on Aug. 2, scared for her baby's life.

Binta Diallo, an ICU nurse with UNC Hospitals, was standing at the store's bakery when the woman rushed up to her holding the bleeding child.

"I looked at her and said, 'Are you OK?' She just handed me the baby and I looked at the baby, and the baby was pouring blood from her nose," described Binta.

"I didn't think the baby was breathing," she added. "She was not crying or anything."

The mother had no idea she picked the right person to help.

Binta said she jumped into action and rushed to the front of the store with the baby in case EMTs showed up.

"When I came to the front of the store, I saw there was rice bags and I just put the baby [on them] and I tried to find the heartbeat. I was like, I do CPR on adults but never on a baby," said Binta.

That’s when she used her two fingers to do compressions.

But nothing was happening.

"I took off my mask and opened her mouth. I didn't do mouth-to-mouth because there was so much blood on her face. I just breathed into it," said Binta. "The baby just gasped and opened her eyes."

That’s when EMS showed up and Binta handed them the baby.

"I was like, 'I cannot believe I just did this.' I was calm the whole time. It was just like I was in my zone or something," said Binta.

Binta said the mother was still in a state of panic, but she’s just happy the baby was breathing again.

"I'm a mom of three. I'm sure I would've been the same," she added.

Binta has a non-profit organization in west Africa called 'Save a Life.' The organization teaches the community CPR in case of an emergency.

Binta said she is hoping to connect with the family and learn how the baby is doing now. Cary police said the family was visiting from out of state.
