RALEIGH, N.C. — The search is ongoing for a woman with connections to North Carolina who disappeared on May 8 after a hike in Maui.

Amanda Eller, 35, is a physical therapist and yoga instructor who lives in Hawaii but has family in Wilmington, Hendersonville and Asheville.

Eller hasn't been seen since May 8, and her former roommate, who lives in Raleigh, said she just wants to know she is safe.

"I’m just praying that she’s out there and alive and that people are going to find her," said Jennifer Thor, Eller's former roommate. "I really miss hearing her voice and knowing that she’s OK."

According to police, Eller’s boyfriend was the last person to see her, but he has been ruled out as a suspect.

On May 9, a day after she left for a hike, Eller's car was found in a Maui Forest Reserve known for its steep and rugged terrain.

Volunteers are armed with GPS devices and hiking supplies but are asking for radios and ATVs to assist with their search for Eller.

Her parents are now managing their "Find Amanda" Facebook page from their home in North Carolina, where thousands of people are posting tips daily.

In a news conference last week, Maui police pledged to keep searching.

"I pledge our commitment to my police department will exhaust all resources available to us as we look for Amanda," Chief Tivoli Faamu said on May 15.

Thor told WRAL News that Eller's family has decided to hire private investigators to help with the search for their daughter.
