FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police are searching for a man wanted in connection with 22 vehicle thefts in and around Fayetteville.

Police said Norman Lynn Helton should be considered armed and dangerous, and he has a past history of weapons charges, including robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Helton was last seen driving a 2010 red four-door Chevrolet Silverado with dark tint.

In the 22 thefts, all but four cars have been recovered, according to police.

Police added that Helton has used a gun in at least one attempt to carjack a person's vehicle, and he has been targeting businesses where customers leave unattended cars running.

Anyone who sees Helton should not approach him, according to police, as they say his crimes spree is escalating.

Two women at First Stop Core & Battery in Fayetteville said they experienced that when they came face to face with Helton and his gun.

"Oh man, I [thought] I might get shot tonight," described Laura Goldinger.

Surveillance video from the scrapyard showed Goldinger and Stephanie McClenny rush out of the office when they caught a guy getting into the shop owner's car.

"I didn't even think about not opening the door. I was like, that's not his truck," said Goldinger. "He claimed he had keys and such - it was clearly not his vehicle."

The women then yanked the car's door open.

"We didn't see the gun until he got out of the vehicle and he had the gun on his side," described McClenny.

"My husband ran around the truck, and that's when the guy pointed the gun at him and told him if he moved he was going to shoot him," she added.

Police are also searching for 28-year-old Lashante Chantel Fisher, an associate of Helton.

Lashante Chantel Fisher is wanted for numerous car theft charges in Fayetteville.

She's wanted for related car theft charges.

McClenny and Goldinger said they caution anyone who encounters Helton to heed the warnings from police and stay away.

"It just really truly makes you thank the Lord for keeping his eye on us at that point," said Goldinger.

Anyone with information on Helton or Fisher is asked to call Detective A. Freeman at 910-973-0885, Detective M. Waters at 910-635-4978 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-TIPS (8477).
