NASH COUNTY, N.C. — In a press conference on Monday, Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said that other inmates alerted jail officials immediately when they noticed five prisoners escape last week.

Stone said five inmates forced their way through a fence in the exercise yard at the Nash County Detention Center at about 3:30 p.m. on March 25 and made their way into a wooded area, where they were picked up by accomplices.

On Monday, Stone shared additional details about the escape, confirming that the escapees had help and were picked up in cars after the jailbreak. The accomplices will be charged with harboring a fugitive, Stone said.

Stone did not release the names of any accomplices or say how many people might ultimately be charged.

Stone also praised the many law enforcement agencies that assisted the Nash County Sheriff's Office in finding and capturing the inmates.

"It's remarkable," Stone said. "The DPS put 60 probation officers on the ground within an hour or two of the escape. The North Carolina Highway Patrol sent helicopters...it shows the partnership. Task force members stayed out all night long [searching for the inmates]. We had unlimited resources out here to apprehend the suspects before they caused any damage.”

Laquaris Rashaad Battle, the fifth and final inmate to be captured, was taken into custody in Hardeeville, S.C., early Sunday morning. He will be transported back to Nash County by Thursday, Stone said.

The four other escapees, identified as David Marshal Viverette, 28, David Ruffin Jr., 30, Keonte Daemoan Murphy, 23, and Raheem D-Carlos Horne, 26, were all captured within 24 hours of their escape.

"The real issue is what carnage they could have caused in the community," Stone said on Monday, thanking the public for its patience.

Viverette and Horne made it to Hal Orr's Inn in Rocky Mount, 15 miles away from the jail in Nashville. A motel employee said the men were hiding in a room that was reserved by a woman two nights in a row.

Viverette was in jail under a more than $100,000 bond on charges on robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Horne is currently facing charges in Nash, Edgecombe, Franklin and Wilson counties. He was due back in court next month and was being held under a $92,500 bond.

Ruffin has a long criminal history, including charges in multiple counties and charges of taking indecent liberties with a child.

He was jailed under a $10,000 bond for a drug charge.

Murphy is also on the sex offender registry and was due in court Tuesday on a simple assault charge. He had previously been out on probation, but was jailed on an assault by strangulation charge, as well as other assault charges.
