WILMINGTON, N.C. — A jury in New Hanover County heard from a Florida man accused of raping a 24-year-old teacher in Wilmington 25 years ago.
The woman was raped in 1996 at an apartment complex near Independence Mall, WECT reports. Her attacker broke in through her window while she was sleeping. When she woke up, she saw a man on top of her. He then punched her in the face, raped her and put a pillow over her mouth to muffle the screams.

The woman's rape kit sat untested on the evidence shelf of the Wilmington Police Department for more than 20 years.

Then, three years ago, state lawmakers approved funding to test old rape kits. The victim reached out to the police department and asked for them to test her kit.

When authorities did, there was a hit -- the semen in her kit matched the DNA of Wayne Soller, 61, from Deltona, Florida.

“I am not a rapist,” Soller told the Wilmington Police Department during his interrogation.

Soller claims he was never in the woman's apartment, and that he is a married father of five. He claims the sex between he and the victim was consensual.

In court on Wednesday, Soller's defense attorney accused police officers of feeding Soller information about the case so that he would confess. WECT reports that detectives with the Wilmington Police Department told Soller his DNA was "all over" the woman's apartment when it was actually only found inside her and on the bottom of her shirt.
The crime lab found DNA from another person that was not Soller in the woman's bedding, WECT reported.
