SAINT PAULS, N.C. — A crash involving 20 vehicles closed Interstate 95 northbound at U.S. Route 301 for hours Saturday.

The highway was closed at mile marker 33, near St. Pauls in Robeson County.

The crash was reported around 8:30 a.m. and involved 17 passenger cars and three tractor trailers, the State Highway Patrol said.

Fog and heavy smoke from a nearby brush fire on private property could have contributed to the crash as visibility was less than the length of one car, officials said.

Several people were taken to hospitals, but no fatalities were reported, officials said.

The highway reopened around noon.
