1 killed, 3 hurt from wrong-way crash on I-540 off-ramp

A wrong-way crash killed one person, sent three people to the hospital and shut down the off-ramp of Interstate 540 onto Falls of Neuse Road on Tuesday morning.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A wrong-way crash killed one person, sent three people to the hospital and shut down the off-ramp of Interstate 540 onto Falls of Neuse Road on Tuesday morning.

The wreck was brought on by a driver going west into oncoming traffic on the I-540 eastbound exit ramp, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.

The names of those involved in the crash have not yet been released. Trooper were working to notify the families.

The driver and the front-seat passenger of the wrong-way vehicle were taken to the hospital. A back seat passenger was killed.

The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to the hospital.

Video from the scene showed two cars that were badly damaged with glass and debris littered along the roadway. Both vehicles were being towed away around 4:30 a.m.

The scene cleared around 5 a.m.
